3 Steps to K-Beautiful Skin

Korea’s premium cosmetics brand, The History Of Whoo, gets skin in order using TCM-based skincare.

The History of Whoo Special

Generally, skin has the ability, capacity and know-how to go about its business, whether it is to defend, detox, heal or repair. But there is one thing that is not within its control. According to The History of Whoo, the Korean brand whose skincare philosophy is steeped in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and oriental herbal remedies, the answer is hormonal change – specifically the decline of the youth-giving oestrogen.

In TCM, the body functions at its best when there is a balance of yin and yang energy. Yin represents oestrogen, and it declines as women age. That’s why, as we get older, our skin becomes duller, drier, less firm, less resilient and more lined.

The History of Whoo addresses the imbalance with its signature regenerative three-product line, Bichup, also known as the brand’s starter kit. The items are Soon Hwan Essence ($122), Ja Saeng Essence ($205) and Ja Yoon Cream ($296), and they supposedly help skin cope better by identifying its core issues and weaknesses, and inducing self-regeneration.

Together, they target the key skin issues associated with ageing: enlarged pores, rougher skin texture, uneven skin tone, bloat from water retention and a less efficient lymphatic system, dry/dehydrated skin, fine lines/wrinkles, and less firm skin.

How to use:

Start with Soon Hwan Essence (after cleansing but before toner/lotion), a serum that promises to prep skin for subsequent skincare with the ideal pH level and environment for product absorption, detox skin by reducing water retention, improve skin tone, and provide essential nutrients.

Next, Ja Saeng Essence, the Korean brand’s region-wide bestseller (three million units have been sold since The History of Whoo was launched in 2003). The serum boasts Cho Jahabidan, a lab-produced plant placenta derivative. It reportedly mimics the effects of human placenta to help enhance skin’s ability to identify its own weaknesses and activate the right cells for self-repair and regeneration. It also supplies skin with antibodies and nutrition.

Finish with Ja Yoon Cream, a multi-tasking moisturiser that is said to give skin cells an energy boost, improve their turnover, reduce free radical damage, normalise cell regeneration, and bring back radiance.

All three items are suitable for all skin types, except for the acne-prone.
