Over the past year or so, there's been a noticeable movement in skincare circles towards protecting and repairing one's skin barrier. And a key ingredient in that process is ceramides. While buzzy ingredients like niacinamide and vitamin C often hog the spotlight, it's foundational things like ceramides that keep the basics (like your skin barrier) in tip-top condition, before you can go on to add the jazzy stuff like vitamin C.

Ceramides are beneficial lipids (fats) that are naturally present in the uppermost layers of skin. Think of them as the all-important glue that helps to keep skin cells together to form a protective layer to limit loss of hydration from the skin (nobody wants to look like a dried out prune) and protects it against external stressors like pollution.

But if ceramides are already naturally found in our skin, why do we need to add more through skincare? As you would probably have guessed, age and sun damage depletes the amount of ceramides we have over the years.

Chanel Beauty's Nº1 De Chanel Rich Revitalizing Cream is a potential dry-skin saviour this winter.

And this queen ingredient is now at the heart of Chanel's new Rich Revitalizing Cream, the latest addition to the maison's Nº1 De Chanel range, which was thoughtfully designed to take pre-emptive measures towards skin ageing.

The moisturiser contains ceramides derived from the red camellia plant. Ceramides are super beneficial and crucial to your skin barrier as it helps to form a protective layer to prevent water loss from the skin.

Like everything else in the Nº1 De Chanel range, this rich moisturiser contains red camellia - this time in the form of ceramides derived from the plant that according to Chanel, is well-known for its resilience, even in the dead of winter (that's when the red camellia's flowers bloom).

Alongside the camellia ceramides, this moisturiser also contains hydrating camellia oil and a yeast extract found in the camellia's microbiota, all of which work in tandem to strengthen your skin's barrier - especially crucial during the finicky colder months. If winter travel plans are on your calendar - this moisturser might be a good option to add to your skincare arsenal.

The Nº1 De Chanel Rich Revitalizing Cream ($169) is available come January 5 on Chanel Beauty's e-shop and Chanel's Fragrance and Beauty boutiques.
