Launched in 2001, Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle fragrance just got its most significant update in years, including a new face: Gracie Abrams.

Every face of Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle fragrance has had one job: to embody a woman who doesn’t ask for permission. The first was Kate Moss, who fronted it from its 2001 debut with the same off‑duty, couldn’t‑care‑less cool that made her one of the era’s most photographed models. The steely‑meets‑seductive Keira Knightley took over in 2007 – and played that role right up till 2023.

Now, it’s Gracie Abrams’s turn as the maison launches Coco Mademoiselle Crush Absolu – in‑house perfumer Olivier Polge’s intense ambery reworking of the original scent (fun fact: it was created by his father, Jacques). Like the 2001 perfume, it opens with fruity notes – this time, grapefruit and lychee – but quickly delves into a heart of rose and jasmine before settling into a rich and comforting base of patchouli, vetiver and vanilla. “It is not about conforming, but about revealing oneself, surprising oneself,” says Polge of the new formula – which can also be said of Abrams.

The 27‑year‑old pop star has long drawn Gabrielle Chanel comparisons (the dark, cropped hair; the brown eyes) and, like the house founder, this house ambassador keeps on defying conventions. Cue her latest album, Daughter from Hell, which was released this July and expands the hushed, folk‑leaning style she has built her name on with more strings and synths – a risk critics have singled out as producing some of her best work yet.

“I love that Coco is someone who leaves a mark everywhere she goes,” says Abrams. “Sometimes, I wish I could be more like her.” Sounds like she’s already there.
