The Perfect Matte Lippie For Those Who’ve Sworn Off Matte Lipstick

Rouge Dior On Stage Matte and Ink Blur Matte give up the flat, dry finish of old-school matte for something softer. We wore both to find out if Dior’s “blurring” promise holds up.

Matte lipstick used to come with caveats: chalky, cracked by the afternoon, and faintly uncomfortable the entire time. The 2026 version goes by a different name – the “blurred lip” – and Dior’s two newest additions to its Rouge Dior On Stage collection are built exactly for it.

Rouge Dior On Stage Matte review: colour without the dryness

For those who like the precision and convenience of a bullet lipstick, there is Rouge Dior On Stage Matte. It’s the matte counterpart to the high-shine Rouge Dior On Stage lippie, which was launched last year (and “a huge success” according to Dior Makeup creative and image director Peter Philips). The new formula uses the same two-phase technology.

Extra points to Rouge Dior On Stage Matte for its super-chic slender case that’s as lightweight as the lipstick formula inside it.

Phase one locks in the pigment. Even a single swipe gives saturated colour, and it stays that way. We didn’t put Dior’s claim of 24-hour transfer-proof wear to a full test. Still, we needed only a few touch-ups when we wore 110 Magnetic Nude – a cool, rosy nude – from afternoon into night on a recent weekend.

Phase two is what Dior calls the “soft blur”. Fine powders impart what’s akin to a sensorial diffusing effect without altering colour. As pigmented and shine-free as it is, Rouge Dior On Stage Matte actually feels good – even creamy – upon application, and near-weightless after settling in.

What is a blurred lip?

When we interviewed Philips in June, he suggested “blurring” as a better word for the new generation of matte products he and his team have developed. After trying out this lipstick, it’s easy to see why.

Rouge Dior On Stage Matte doesn’t have the flat, severe finish of traditional matte lipsticks. Instead, it leans soft in both look and feel, and the shade range follows suit. There are 10 wearable colours, the boldest being 460 Red On Stage, a warm orangey-red (brand ambassador Jenna Ortega’s pick for red carpet occasions). The point here is texture, not look-at-me colour.

How to get a blurred lip with Dior’s Ink Blur Matte

The blurring idea goes further in the new liquid lippie, Rouge Dior On Stage Ink Blur Matte. This is the option for anyone who wants to play with their lip colour: It’s buildable, which matte formulas rarely are.

Thanks to a combination of blurring gels and special polymers, the Rouge Dior On Stage Ink Blur Matte liquid lipstick is said to offer 24-hour no-transfer wear.

Philips explains how to use it best: “What I like to do to get a soft blurry effect is to apply it on the bottom lip, then dab with my fingers, and you’ll get a lip tint that feels like second skin. If you do a second layer, the colour becomes more clear, and with a third layer, you get full colour.”

We tried his method in 122 Captivating Rose – a soft pink with nude undertones – and it works. What’s even more impressive is the texture: Even at the third layer, it feels airy and remains comfortable for hours.

Dior matte lipstick: bullet or liquid?

Go for Rouge Dior On Stage Matte if you want precise, full colour in one swipe, and Ink Blur Matte if you’d rather control the intensity yourself, from a sheer tint to full colour. Either way, calling them matte might be a misnomer. We’re just calling them our new everyday lipsticks.
