Hermes Drops A New Barenia Perfume

Good news if you can’t get enough of Hermes’ Barenia perfume: its new sister, the Barenia Pleine Fleur, adds a softer, more floral touch to the original chypre.

Hermes

Two years ago, Hermes launched Barenia, its first-ever chypre perfume, a sophisticated, feminine take on this classic category that mixed airy butterfly lily with sweet miracle berry, anchored by a clean, woody patchouli base.

For the uninitiated, chypres (pronounced “sheep-ruh”) are one of perfumery’s oldest and most complex families in perfumery, defined by a deliberate contrast between bright citrus notes and darker, earthier ones.

Think of them as the chic, worldly cousin of the fragrance scene: less obvious than your typical crowd-pleasing sugary gourmands, perhaps, but infinitely more interesting; the appeal lies in how they transform over the course of the day, starting off fresh and sparkling before settling into something moodier and more intriguing.

The OG Barenia was then joined by the Barenia Intense in 2025, and today, a second flanker arrives in the form of the Barenia Pleine Fleur. You could view this new entrant as the more floral-leaning sister to the original Barenia; the woody-skin chypre backbone is still there, but it’s softened by an infusion of white lily and orange blossom, making it feel brighter, creamier and a little more romantic.

There’s also a rum-like undertone, thanks to the inclusion of roasted oak wood, while Gayo patchouli adds a clean, suede-like warmth to the concoction. The signature miracle berry is of course accounted for, but it’s presented here in a warm, apricot-ish iteration.

While the Barenia Pleine Fleur retains the original bottle’s idiosyncrasies like the pyramidal studs and elliptical shape, the concoction itself takes on an orange-pink hue; perhaps hinting at the perfume’s warmer, softer approach.

Fun fact: the original Barenia perfume was inspired by Hermes’ signature leather of the same name, which is said to be highly durable, supple and acquires a beautiful patina over time.

The new Barenia Pleine Fleur eau de parfum ($229 for 60ml; $311 for 100ml, $311 for 125ml refill) takes its name from a French leather term for full-grain hide — the most natural, unprocessed layer of the material. Literally translated, it means “full flower”, which feels like a subtle nod to the more floral direction of this version, while still staying rooted in the leather story that started it all.
