When talking about skincare innovations, you can’t escape exosomes. Described as “the future of skincare,” exosomes are making rounds on the internet for its regenerative and rejuvenation benefits. But what is it exactly? How does it benefit the skin?

Here, we break down some key things to know about exosomes.

WHAT ARE EXOSOMES?

Exosomes are tiny particles released by cells, carrying proteins, lipids, and genetic materials such as RNA or miRNA. Think of it as a bearer of all the good stuff, controlling how your other cells behave and sending signals to them to help skin reparations and defying signs of age.

WHERE DOES EXOSOME COME FROM?

Human-derived exosomes are considered the most potent type, in skincare they are often sourced from donated human stem cells and biomanufactured under controlled conditions. But due to safety regulations and stability concerns, this type is more often used for in-office treatments. On the other hand, plant- and fruit-derived exosomes are easier to find in over-the-counter topical cosmetics, largely due to accessibility and cost-effectiveness. While they are generally less potent than human-derived exosomes, they still offer great skin benefits, at a cheaper price at that, too.

WHO IS IT GOOD FOR?

Exosomes in skincare are extremely beneficial for skin regeneration and rejuvenation. As we age, our skin’s natural ability to repair and renew itself gets compromised — that’s where exosomes come in. They signal your skin cells to restore balance, stimulating collagen and help repair skin barriers.

But don’t mistake it for a replacement of other skincare ingredients. Rather as a replacement, exosomes work to complement other ingredients to boost skin health. Since they don’t trigger cell turnover, they can be safely paired with any active ingredients - though we recommend a patch test beforehand.

If you’re looking to boost skin elasticity, radiance, and anti-aging skincare, look no further than a bottle of skincare formulated with exosomes.
