Art Director Kim Wong Tells Us About His Massive Punk Rock Collection

As part of this month's focus on the disrupters shaking up fashion, beauty and design now, the Female team shares the wildest names and things they’re into (like, really, really into). Here, art director Kim Wong shares his.

“It all started when I first heard Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit on the radio in the ’90s, and thought that the mix of Kurt Cobain’s raw vocals, dirty distortion guitars and hard-hitting drums was like nothing I had ever heard."

"Soon, I was reading obsessively about grunge and its punk roots (let’s just say that without The Sex Pistols, Ramones or Misfits, there might be no Nirvana), and now I have a collection of over 300 vinyls from the genre."

"Why vinyl? Because it’s how you get the purest of its loud, fast, aggressive sound that’s been the anthem of the anti-establishment since the ’70s."

"And because the covers of 12-inch records are often so beautiful, they’re works of art. Like-minded enthusiasts should join the Facebook group Singapore Vinyl Junkies – I started it in 2010.”
