Things To Do In Singapore: The Barbie Movie Is Finally Here!
Our weekly edit of things to check out.
By Keng Yang Shuen & Nicholas See,
After what feels like ages, the Barbie movie is finally here - is it going to live up to the very high expectations that comes with all the hype (some warranted, like having the ingenious Greta Gerwig as director - some not)? Regardless, it's still going to be the movie that will be on everyone's lips, so get cracking.
The ultimate doll flick is finally here, after what feels like an eternity of endless marketing campaigns - Margot Robbie for one, has had one of the most impressive promo tours in recent years with her non-stop contemporary homages to classic Barbie designs.
Then, there's Barbie's parent company Mattel collaborating with over 100 brands to do activations of every size. Beyond official collaborations, other brands and media platform have unabashedly jumping onto the Barbie bandwagon to cash in on the #Barbiecore craze - so the feeling that the film is inescapable has been percolating.
Still, you bet we're still going to be catching the film this weekend. The Greta Gerwig-directed piece has been receiving generally positive reviews for its deft blend of hot pink fantasy-meets-satire and if you can't get enough of Barbie, independent cinema The Projector is currently hosting a contest where people are invited to take a photo inside their larger-than-life Doll Box set up at the cinema's foyer - you'll stand a chance to win a $120 Projector ticket gift voucher pack (more details here).
Barbie opens today in Singapore cinemas
Gen Z Bhutanese artist Galek Yangzom is debuting her first solo exhibition titled "Patterned Prayer". The artist is known for her vivid oil paintings, and the ones in her exhibition are inspired by Bhutanese culture. Yangzom has taken the motifs, designs, and patterns she interacts with daily, such as the Kira (traditional Bhutanese clothes worn by women) she inherited from her mother, and recontextualised them into abstract elements in her paintings. Here's a rare chance to know Bhutanese culture through the eyes of the next generation of artists - don't miss out.
The exhibition is on from July 21 - July 22, 10am - 6pm at Gallery II, The Arts House, 1 Old Parliament Lane
The Singapore Food Festival is now in its 30th year and organisers say it's the largest edition to date, with more than 100 vendors taking part. First started in 1994, the wildly popular gastronomic affair was designed to celebrate and spotlight local food culture and one of the most interesting booths to look out for is the sustainability-minded restaurant Kausmo.
Run by founders Lisa Tang and Kuah Chew Shian, Kausmo is beloved for its ethos of creatively repurposing "ugly" fruits, vegetables and seafood that have been overstocked, are over-ripe, or have odd-shapes, all of which are primarily sourced from local and regional farmers. Kausmo fans will know that the founders shuttered its physical space for good this June after a well-received four year run to explore other options and if you've missed them, drop by their booth, where they're offering spicy mussels with basil picada and fried buns (pictured). There are also various masterclasses, workshops and gourmet markets to explore - get your ticket here.
On now till July 30 at Bayfront Event Space, 12A Bayfront Avenue
