Dolla Interview: Music Matters Live 2026
Dolla

There’s no mistaking Dolla when they’re on stage. Between the slick choreography, bold styling and, most importantly, the attitude to match. Made up of Sabronzo Rusli, Tabby Lam and Angel Chai, Dolla first debuted in 2020 and have since become one of Malaysia’s most recognisable girl groups. Their discography has seen them explore everything from the playful energy of Mwa! to the darker, grungier sound of Goat and the sassy edge of their latest single, Ugly.

And the experimentation doesn’t stop at the music. Fashion has always been a big part of the group’s identity, with their looks moving between edgy, colourful and unapologetically fierce. If there’s one thing Dolla isn’t afraid of, it’s trying something new.

The trio recently touched down in Singapore for Music Matters Live 2026, performing as part of the Music Is Universal showcase alongside artists from across Southeast Asia. We caught up with Dolla to talk about their latest release, favourite songs to perform, stage essentials and more below.

Hey Sabronzo, Tabby and Angel! Let’s start with your latest release, Ugly. What inspired the song, and what was the process of putting it together like?

Angel Chai: I think we were in a studio with our amazing producers and writers, and we were just messing around with some instruments, some vocals here and there, and then, bam. I think one of us had the idea, and it just came out: Ugly. For some reason, we were just talking about things being ugly.

Tabby Lam: Yeah, we wanted something kind of sassy, and I think we’re in a kind of dark but at the same time sassy era. So we wanted something bratty, which I think [the line] “Gonna Get Ugly” sounds like. Our producer, Johan (Johan Gustafsson), is a genius and he had all sorts of ideas for the sounds, and lyricist Rebbi (Rebbi James) was there to help us with creating the track as well. An amazing team that created the song so fast.

Sabronzo Rusli: It was done in a few hours. We were blown away. We love it.

Fans also love Dolla’s visual identity and styling. How would you describe the Dolla aesthetic?

Tabby: We were thinking about this recently, and I think one of the words is “baddie”. We like to try to keep that baddie energy no matter what the look is.

Angel: Experimental.

Sabronzo: At the start of this new era, when our previous single came out, which was Goat, I think the direction was darker, more grungy. And then Ugly came out and it was more of a transition into a lighter vibe. And now that Ugly is out, we are so free. We want to experiment with colours now. Honestly, we love it.

What’s each of your personal favourite Dolla songs to perform live, and why?

Angel: I have to say Mwa!. I think it just has that energy, and also a lot of people love Mwa!. When we perform it, we feel some kind of burning soul inside of us.

Sabronzo: Well, for me, I think it would be Ugly because the choreography itself is such a masterpiece. Shout out [to our choreographer] Ezra. He did it all. We used to play a lot with imagery back then when we had our first few songs in the beginning. But now we’re tapping back into that and we’re playing more with the big picture in general.

Tabby: Ezra’s always been super good at that. I think for me, it has to be... It’s All Over You. It is an unreleased track that we performed here in Singapore for the first time ever. And it’s got to be the fave right now because it’s so fresh for us. We just love the song and the choreo and everything about it.

Do you each have a go-to stage outfit or fashion staple?

Tabby: As a group, we love our boots. I mean, just because we’re a dance group as well, we really love to have some cute boots, I must tell you.

Angel: A lot of the staple pieces that make our outfit are accessories, like big earrings or bangles, because they help with enhancement for our dancing, but at the same time, every time we’re flinging our hands, they just end up being all around the stage.

Sabronzo: One of her earrings flew off the stage earlier.

Tabby: Girl, fun fact, I was wearing orange earrings, which are now silver because they flew off the stage. So did my nail. Boom.

You’re performing as part of Music Matters Live’s Music Is Universal showcase alongside artists from across Southeast Asia. Is there anyone on the line-up you’re excited to see or meet?

Marbles Jakarta Indonesian girl group

Jakarta-based girl group Marbles were among the regional acts performing at Music Matters Live 2026.

Marbles

Tabby: Everyone. I mean, we just met them this morning in Singapore as well, and I think they’re all super young, super talented. I think it’s such an honour to be meeting other girl groups that come from all across Southeast Asia because it’s so cool to see different cultures and different vibes and energies bouncing off each other.

Sabronzo: I agree. I mean, no one specific, but a lot of girl groups are here, even boy groups as well, and they really just put their heart out on the stage. We perform a lot in our own country, so it’s not like we meet these people on a daily basis. It’s really refreshing to see new artists and how they perform, and they did great.

Vvv Bangkok boy group

Bangkok-based boy group Vvv were another of the regional acts on the lineup.

Vvv

Angel: Yeah, and I think it’s so exciting because every one of us comes from different cultures, and then when we are exchanging content and sharing about what we do, the kind of music that we have, it’s so different. Thailand has their style, Indonesia has Jedag Jedug (a bass-heavy Indonesian electronic music style). It’s so fun! I think it’s the best part of our trip so far and also our performance. It’s so many…

Tabby: Different flavours.

Angel: Yeah, different flavours into one festival.

What do you guys enjoy doing when you’re not working on your music?

Sabronzo: I like a good self-care day. I love a good massage. It really just relaxes me.

Angel: I like treating myself with good food. And sometimes I like to go bouldering with my friends. I think that helps in releasing stress.

Tabby: For me, I’m an at-home girly. I like to play games. I also like to watch anime. So, those are my chill, off-day activities.
