This week, don't miss out a lovely group show – cleverly titled Sewing Discord – by five Singapore artists who have incorporated craft techniques in their practices and are attempting to disrupt traditional, sexist stereotypes of crafts, especially in the fine arts world.

Folks would also do well to check out Lasalle College of The Art's graduate show for its Class of 2021. Lastly, those interested in sustainability in a fashion context should definitely tune in to Fashion Revolution SG's interesting line-up of events and discussions.

PAY ATTENTION TO FASHION REVOLUTION WEEK

Fashion Revolution Week 2021
1/3

If you're even remotely curious about the state of sustainability in a fashion context, don't miss out on this virtual event organised by Fashion Revolution SG, the Singaporean chapter of a global movement calling for greater transparency, sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry. A week-long bonanza of discussions, presentations and even a clothes swap are on the line up, touching on various topics within this broad umbrella term.

The bonus? The organisers have structured it so that the topics are entirely pertinent to local audiences – think the garment workers who make our clothes, what fashion waste looks like in Singapore and the role of socio-economic privilege play in creating fashion waste. There's even an extensive report commissioned by Fashion Revolution SG on what local consumers think about sustainable fashion consumption in partnership with Oxford University’s Oxford Development Consultancy.

Like we said, it's impressive stuff that should interest anyone who wants to learn more. All talks are free and registration is now open on Peatix. More details here.

On now till April 25

CHECK OUT THIS EXHIBITION IF YOU'RE INTO CRAFTS

There's clearly been a boom in recent years in all sorts of crafts as people seek to reconnect with all things tactile against a backdrop of social distancing, digital burnouts and more.

The Esplanade's newest exhibition, Sewing Discord, is a riff on the traditional arts of weaving, embroidery, origami and cross-stitching. It sees five artists – Ginette Chittick, Berny Tan (whose work, Talismans for Disentanglement, is pictured here), Nature Shankar, Jodi Tan and Hazel Lim – all of whom are seeking to reinterpret the tenuous position of craft within the deeply hierarchical world of art.

As the press release states, craft is "commonly seen as a medium used by women in domesticated spaces – it is devoid of power and strength and one that is perceived as purely decorative and trivial". Hit up the exhibition to see how the artists have disrupted and upended its traditional stereotypes. More details here.

On now till July 4 at Jendela Gallery, Esplanade
