H&M's New Sustainable Concept Takes A Progressive Approach To Fabric Design
It’s official, cactus leather is in.
As it continues its commitment to sustainable fashion, H&M has launched its latest initiative, Innovation Stories, which will feature a range of collections all through 2021.
The collection is part of the brand’s new concept which showcases sustainable processes and will feature new materials such as EVO by Fulgar, a bio-based yarn derived from castor oil, and Desserto, which is a plant-based alternative to leather, produced from cactus plants.
The debut collection to launch under the Innovation Stories concept is called Science Story and pays tribute to the brilliant minds behind fabrications of the future.
Manufactured in Mexico, Desserto is a sustainable and cruelty-free alternative to traditional cowhide. The material is made by drying mature leaves from the plant and converting them into pliable leather.
In this collection, it’s used in womenswear pieces such as wide-leg bright white jeans with removable double waistband, a cuffed tracksuit and a cropped collared shirt with an oversized breast pocket.
The first collection to launch under the collective will also include bold accessories to match the collection’s clean and classic ready-to-wear designs. Think — a chunky necklace with orange swirls and rhinestones, statement loop rhinestone-studded earrings, neon green strap sandals, and recycled plastic blue sunglasses with a double-lens frame.
