Laufey Announces Third Studio Album, A Matter Of Time, Listen To Her New Single Lover Girl Now
Calling all lover girls and boys, a new heartbreak, eff-your-ex anthem just dropped, it’s Laufey’s new track “Tough Luck.”
By Lucy Lauron,
By now, Laufey’s name and sound require little introduction. After all, 2024 was a very Laufey year. She dropped an album, won a Grammy, went on a world tour, and even launched a book club (remember that Kinokuniya collab, Singaporean Lauvers?). Safe to say, the Icelandic-Chinese artiste has earned her spot among the new generation pop it-girls. It was only a matter of time for her to drop some much-anticipated new music (pun intended).
Her 14-track album, A Matter of Time is slated to drop on August 22. From the jump, Laufey seems to be gunning for artistic evolution. Where her Grammy-winning album Bewitched had soft and contemplative imagery, A Matter of Time shows us a darker, edgier Laufey. Check the bold black eyeliner, the gothic Victorian set, dramatic lighting- it’s Laufey’s venture into a new kind of visual artistry. Basically, if Laufey was in her Lover-era in Bewitched, it looks like she’s entering her Reputation-era now.
A Matter of Time is slated for release on August 22, and Laufey is teaming up celebrity producer Aaron Dessner, who's all about musical transformation (he co-produced several tracks with the likes of Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran).
Still, it looks like we’ll be getting lots of her trademark jazz-pop sound. So far, we’ve got two of fourteen tracks out: Tough Luck (which dropped its lyric video on May 15) and Silver Lining. Her deep, honey-sweet voice shines through, with her signature witty cynicism and multi-instrumental expertise. In Tough Luck, though, rather than her humourous self-deprecation, she lays into an ex.
She shares, “Tough Luck is a fiery song about love gone wrong. I wanted to reveal an angrier side of myself- a side that this unfortunate relationship brought out in me.” Meanwhile, her new single, Lover Girl, is about the quiet heartbreak of missing someone deeply, "The hardest part of loving someone is being away from them. This is that story.” To Laufey's list of many talents, add versatile to the list. If you're uninitiated, however, we've got you:
