Have You Seen Loewe’s Tomatoes Around Singapore?
The Spanish maison turns 180 this year, and it’s marking the occasion with a playful capsule collection and a magazine takeover at some of Singapore’s coolest spots.
By Carlos Keng,
In case you haven’t heard, Spanish luxury house Loewe is turning a big 180. Yes, that’s nearly two centuries of leather excellence; after all, Loewe got its start as a Madrid-based collective of leather artisans in 1846. But let’s face it, you don’t really get to survive - and thrive - for 180 years without evolving and in recent years, there’s definitely been a more pronounced vein of playfulness within the brand.
You could say former creative director Jonathan Anderson had a key role in fanning Loewe’s creative flair, and now that whimsical streak continues under new head honchos Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez; just see their updated version of the house’s classic Amazona bag.
Loewe’s cute new lion emblem appear everywhere on the special 180th anniversary capsule collection.
Case in point: the just-dropped capsule collection marking Loewe’s 180th anniversary. Bags, small leather goods and T-shirts all come stamped with an adorable lion emblem created by artist David Shrigley for the house.
Across the collection, the lion appears as beaded embroidery, leather intarsia, bag charms, and even hidden inside the Amazona 180. It’s a neat reminder that Loewe has always balanced serious craftsmanship with a healthy sense of humour.
Why all the lions? Fun fact: “Loewe” is the German word for lion. The name comes from Enrique Loewe Roessberg, a German merchant who moved to Madrid and was so taken by the craftsmanship of the house’s founding artisans that he eventually acquired the workshop and gave it his family name.
Art and design book icon Basheer Graphic Books is the perfect spot for this Loewe activation.
On top of that, the house is also rolling out mini takeovers of local beloved bookstore Basheer Graphic Books, as well as the restaurant-slash-gallery Appetite, where you can expect to pick up complimentary copies of the 11th edition of the Loewe in-house magazine. This time, the magazine comes with a special supplement titled 180 years of Craft.
You can also find copies of the Loewe magazine at the chic restaurant and gallery space Appetite on Amoy Street.
Within this supplement, remarkable objects and creations over the brand’s long history are spotlighted, as well as a peek into the inner workings of Loewe’s atelier in Madrid.
Copies of the magazine can be redeemed here, and they will be available at Basheer Graphic Books till July 14, and at Appetite till July 18 - bon appetit!
