But when his nemesis resurfaces and his daughter suddenly goes missing, he is forced into a fight he thought he left behind.

4. Hamnet

What it’s about: Based on author Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel of the same name, Hamnet is a historical drama centered around the 1596 death of William Shakespeare’s 11-year-old son, Hamnet, who succumbs to the plague. The film dramatises the family life of William Shakespeare as they navigate this devastating loss, exploring the profound and separate grief experienced by Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes. Agnes is portrayed by powerhouse Jessie Buckley, who has already swept the Best Actress prizes at major award ceremonies prior to the Oscars.

5. Bugonia

What it’s about: Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, Bugonia is a darkly comedic thriller – based on the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet! – that reunites the filmmaker with his frequent collaborator and muse, Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone. Stone plays a powerful, high-flying CEO who is kidnapped by two unhinged conspiracy theorists convinced that she is an alien plotting the destruction of Earth. What follows is a twisted, absurdist battle of wits that bears Lanthimos’ signature blend of deadpan humour and unsettling tension.

6. Frankenstein

What it’s about: Guillermo del Toro’s take on Frankenstein is a gothic-horror drama centered around an egotistical and obsessed scientist who brings a monstrous creature to life, only to abandon his creation. What it’s about: Sentimental Value is a poignant Norwegian drama that traces the emotional journey of two sisters who are drawn back into the orbit of their estranged and famous director father, following the death of their mother. 8. The Secret Agent 

What it’s about: The Secret Agent is a tense political thriller film set against the turbulent backdrop of the Fifth Brazilian Republic.
