A Design Insider's Guide To Exploring Penang Like A Local
For the design lover who’s over the usual spots: a local’s guide to Penang’s creative corners and the spaces where art, culture, and community come together.
By Keng Yang Shuen,
Malaysia's northwestern state of Penang has always been renowned (and justifiably so) for its street food culture and traditional architecture but it's also more than that, as Penang-lifer and spatial artist Tan Wei Ming shares.
"I grew up in Penang, and the rhythm of life here is something that I’m deeply connected to," says Tan. "The beauty of this town is that nobody really cares what you do — you can just be yourself, and others can be themselves. Together, it creates a unique environment of mutual growth and decay."
The camera-shy designer
Tan is the brains behind Sputnik Forest, the botanical design studio known for creating some of Malaysia's most atmospheric spaces — like Petaling Jaya's Dou Dou Bake — always crafting with a nature-inspired touch. (The studio's name is after all drawn from Haruki Murakami's Sputnik Sweetheart novel, the name of which translates to "man-made forest" in Mandarin; a nod to how Sputnik Forest blends nature and human ingenuity in their works.)
Ahead, he shares some of Penang's best-kept secrets that are perfect for those with an eye for design and slow living:
MOKOZOYO
"A family-run boutique hotel that also houses Kool Kongsi, which in my opinion is one of the best listening bars in Penang. Come for the records, stay for the charm—think UNESCO heritage vibes, moody late-night chats, and whiskey on the rocks. It’s a place that feels a little in-between, yet entirely of the moment."

INO
"Tucked away on one of George Town’s narrowest lanes, this cosy wine bar is all about good vibes and great natural wines—available by the glass or bottle. There aren’t any chairs (yet), but you’re welcome to settle in on the old wooden floors, sip on alcoholic kombucha, and catch whispers of the latest town gossip. My favourite spot? Right by the window."

O SCULPTURE GALLERY
"Open only on weekends, this quiet gallery - founded by my mentor Low Chee Peng - is dedicated to sculptural works. Expect thoughtful experiments in form, silence, and shadow. It’s not air-conditioned, but the tropical warmth is part of its charm. For the latest exhibitions, check out their Instagram."

CULTPRINT
Run by our friend Ernest Zacharevic, this art print gallery is a haven for affordable works and artists’ editions. Tucked along a quiet stretch of shophouses on Lebuh Melayu, it’s a unique spot that stands out but is also part of a vibrant community — because good art and music always make an impact.

RITUAL
"Ritual is a cafe and sound space by my friend Ah Wei - located on the first floor of an Art Deco building, it’s a place where music, art, and personal expression come together - creating new rituals and connections for kindred spirits in contemporary Penang. Don’t miss the sunset from the huge balcony overlooking terracotta rooftops."

KOFUKU
A simple Japanese diner serving honest rice bowls with warm, welcoming service. It feels just like coming home. No reservations here — the best time to arrive is 5:30 PM, just before they open. If the queue’s too long, wander down for a quick Char Hor Fun and enjoy some karaoke drifting from the nearby community centre.

OJU OJO
"A cosy hideout serving contemporary Korean food with a thoughtful touch. Definitely try the homemade makgeolli — and honestly, anything on the menu is worth ordering. It’s the perfect spot for an evening date."

LUNABAR COFFEE
"My studio shares the space with this cosy coffee bar that's filled with lush, well-loved plants, mismatched furniture collected over time, and soft daylight that filters through. Coffee brings daily comfort here. Bring a book, find a quiet corner, and let yourself drift."
10d, Jalan Clove Hall, George Town, 10050 George Town
H.S. SAM BOOKSTORE
"Tucked along Chulia Street, this indie bookstore offers curated titles, bike rentals, and classic travel advice. A relic from the backpacker era, yet still relevant today. The shelves are packed with great books, neatly organised by genre and alphabetically. I even found a copy of Murakami’s The City and Its Uncertain Walls here."
410, Chulia St, Georgetown, 10200 George Town
TROPICAL SPICE GARDEN
"There may be no apples in this Eden-like garden, but what more could you wish for on this humid island? Tucked near the beach resort Batu Ferringhi, it brings you a little closer to being in sync with Mother Nature. This lush space is a living archive of tropical herbs, spices, and plants. Walk slowly, listen deeply."
