Founded in 1955 in Aarhus, Danish furniture label Wendelbo is one of those boutique brands that is prestigiously Scandinavian and affordable. Currently managed by the third generation of its founding family, Wendelbo has long preferred to distribute its products globally via a network of trusted retailers.

So, it says something when it trusts local furniture retailer Made & Make to open a mono-brand showroom late last year.

Occupying a 250 sq m retail space at a mid-century industrial building in Genting Road, Wendelbo by Made & Make is the brand’s first dedicated store outside Denmark.

“We like the space because it has great natural light coming in through large glass windows on its two sides,” says Made & Make founder Erricson Wong, whose Made & Make store is on level four of the same building.

The interior of the showroom is kept minimal. The walls and ceiling are white while the flooring is screed cement. “It’s a blank canvas to display Wendelbo’s products,” explains Wong.

The lofty 4.4-metre ceiling is ideal for displaying pendant lights with a contemporary aesthetic as it highlights their lines and geometric shapes. Asked why Made & Made decided to open a mono-brand store for Wendelbo, Wong says: “Wendelbo furniture fits a wide variety of local projects, and not only residential projects but commercial and hospitality ones, too.”

Besides its versatility and a star-studded list of international designer collaborators, including Luca Nichetto, Toan Nguyen, Anderssen & Voll, Note Design Studio and Iskos, the brand is also reasonably priced. A two-seater sofa, for example, could start at $2,000.

“The minimalist interior allows customers to appreciate and interact with the furniture,” says Wong. In the showroom, bestselling pieces like the Peak Sofa by 365 North and the Edge sofa by Lars Wendelbo, whose compact proportions fit easily into Singapore homes, sit alongside more recent and grander pieces, such as Lars’ Dijon carpets and Luca’s Floema tables and Cinder Sofa.

Here and there, colour block artworks by Toan Nguyen – a nod to Wendelbo’s presentation at design fair 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen – lend a geometric accent to the minimalist ensemble.
