The Boiler Room name needs no introduction if you're into the nightlife scene. That, or if you're one of those who have its popular DJ sets recordings on Youtube streaming in the background while working on the laptop. For the uninitiated, though, the party series has its roots in 2010 as a webcam DJ session broadcasting out of London from a camera duct-taped to the wall of an abandoned boiler room.
Its evolution has seen it grow from a chronicler of the underground nightlife scene and a club forum on the web to become the main event with shows in cities around the globe that reportedly reach an audience of more than 157 million a month. As proof of its weight as a cultural behemoth, Boiler Room launched the video streaming platform 4:3 in 2018 as a portal for independent films and documentaries. which has earned it the label “Netflix for the underground”.
Despite all that, the Boiler Room experience has never reached our shores physically. That was until last weekend when it made its debut in Singapore over two nights on July 28 and 29. Held on the tarmac of Tanjong Pagar Distripark, the event was presented here as part of Heineken's 150th-year anniversary party, Destination Good Times. FEMALE was there on opening night, which had sets by DJs such as A'alely, PetYet, Dean Chew and Bongomann. The event on the second night featured the likes of Helios XL and Kindergarchy on the decks.
