Where’s The Party At? In Singapore, It Might Be A Kopitiam Or A Bookstore
Singapore’s new party vibe: sober spaces, slow brews, and soulful beats.
By Sarah Adriana,
As someone who's spent more nights than I’d like to admit shouting over music in too-loud clubs, I can confidently say this shift is a welcome one. Singapore’s social scene is evolving — and not in the way you’d expect. A new wave of concept experiences is replacing the usual nightlife with something more intentional: curated soundscapes, cosy venues (shout out to Lagoon Laundry which holds its parties in a laundrette), and a focus on real connection over chaos.
Yes, DJs are still part of the picture — but now you’ll find them spinning chilled-out sets at cafes or local coffee spots, often while the sun’s still out. It’s nightlife, reimagined for those of us craving good music without the 2am hangovers. And at the forefront of this cultural shift are two homegrown collectives worth knowing: Beans&Beats and Kopicats, each creating spaces where music lovers can gather, vibe, and unwind — no strobe lights required.
BEANS&BEATS
Get down and groove at Beans&Beats parties – where the fun never stops.
WHO’S BEHIND IT: Beans&Beats was founded in May 2024 by three friends with distinct passions and a shared vision. Ethan Lee, a specialty coffee brewer; Aden Low, a DJ and underground music advocate; and Matteo Lie, a former nightlife events organiser who wanted something more intentional than your typical party scene. Their mission? To create an alcohol-free space where music and coffee coexist — minus the hangover.
What began as an intimate apartment gathering has since blossomed into a word-of-mouth sensation, with pop-ups taking over everything from retail stores to rooftop gardens and cafes across Singapore.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Each Beans&Beats event is a meticulously curated experience — not just a party. Venues are chosen with the energy and aesthetic in mind, balancing vibey dance floors with relaxed zones where conversations (and cortados) flow freely.
Expect a genre-hopping playlist spanning Latin House, Baile Funk, and amapiano — but with a twist. “We use amapiano edits of mainstream tracks so the sound feels fresh but still familiar,” Lee explains. It’s about bridging the gap between discovery and danceability, especially for newcomers to underground music.
Also refreshing? The absence of alcohol. “Without the haze of intoxication, people genuinely connect — with the music, the space, and each other,” Lee shares.
Throwing it back to last year's unforgettable Christmas Sunset Rooftop Party by Beans&Beats — where good vibes, great music, and stunning views created the perfect holiday celebration.
During golden hour, Beans&Beats turned a rooftop into a glowing retreat filled with deep cuts and drip coffee, proving that the best parties don’t need booze to create the perfect buzz.
WHY IT IS WORTH A VISIT: Beans&Beats doesn’t just host parties — its founders are cultivating a movement. By prioritising wellness, intention, and artistry, the collective is carving out a new kind of nightlife: one that’s inclusive, grounded, and community-led.
Its vision extends beyond the dancefloor. With plans to spotlight local cafes, roasters, and DJs on their online platform — and even create permanent "third spaces" for regular gatherings — Beans&Beats is on track to become more than just a pop-up name. It’s a lifestyle shift for the better.
As Lee puts it, “We’re not trying to kill the club — we just think there’s space for something different.”

KOPICATS
Kopicats took over Keng Wah Sung coffee shop for one of its sets – proof you don’t need a club to throw a party, just a kopitiam and the right crew.
WHO’S BEHIND IT: Kopicats is the brainchild of Axel Timothy Chee, Aaditya 'Tya' Sundar, and Park Claudia, a trio of friends whose impromptu DJ-led hangouts have transformed mundane spots like local coffee shops and zhi char joints into vibrant community hubs. What started as a group chat turned into something much more: a celebration of spontaneous, laid-back vibes and casual connection.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Expect unexpected venues that reflect the heart of Singapore’s local culture — from Basheer Bookstore, a local arts favourite, to humble kopitiams like Tong Ah Eating House and Keng Wah Sung. The music? Fluid and easygoing, with a mix of Asian groove, soul, funk, and jazz. It's more about setting the right mood for conversation and connection than turning up the volume for a full-blown party. And who knows, you might find yourself dancing when the music hits just right.
Good music and coffee have even made their way into spaces like the iconic Basheer Bookstor at Bras Basah Complex.
WHY VISIT IT: If you’re tired of the big club nights and are looking for a refreshing way to unwind with friends, Kopicats offers a space for relaxation, fun, and connection — without the pressure of being at a “real” party. The casual, inviting atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to be present, catch up with old friends, or meet new ones in a relaxed, unpretentious setting. Plus, you’ll be part of something slowly growing into a new type of social scene in Singapore.
That time when Kopicats turned a quiet corner of a bookstore into a sonic refuge.
Kopicats isn’t about making grand statements. It’s about fostering a sense of community, bringing people together to enjoy good company, music, and unique venues. It’s an experience that’s as much about the people as it is about the vibe. If you're looking for something different, Kopicats might just be your new go-to.
