It’s that time of year again – when Singapore’s modelling hopefuls flock to one place: Basic Models’ annual open casting. Founded by Bonita Ma, the agency has built a reputation for discovering some of the country’s top talent, from former Gucci face Layla Ong to F ZINE favourite Nicole Liew.

This year’s turnout was no exception. Queues began forming well before the 10am registration at the agency’s MacPherson HQ, as the atmosphere buzzed with ambition, nerves, and undeniable style. A total of 211 hopefuls casted with just 20 shortlisted.

From fresh-faced first-timers in thrifted fits to seasoned returnees debuting a new edge, each arrival had their own take on what it means to be runway-ready in 2025. Armed with our trusty F ZINE People Cam, we hit the scene to capture the looks, the energy, and the personalities that turned heads.

Scroll on and you might just spot fashion’s next big face.

FPC Basic Models Darcie
Clement Goh

Name: Darcie Binsley

Age: 25

Occupation: Model

Her fit: “My black tank top is from Zara, the white skirt is from Hollister, and my shoes are from H&M. My bag features the Whistlejacket painting by George Stubbs and was bought at the National Gallery in London.”

Her challenges faced: “The whole experience was smooth and well organised, making it more relaxing than past castings. Still, fear of rejection is always there – it used to make me nervous, but now I use it to stay determined and confident. Rejection is something you have to get used to quickly in modelling and acting.

Another challenge has been navigating the work pass and visa situation. Having recently moved from England, I’m still figuring out which pass suits foreigners wanting to work in Singapore. This has made continuing my modelling career here difficult and didn’t help during the Basic Models casting. But I’m actively working on it for the future.”

Most memorable part of the day: “The best part was meeting so many lovely people in line. I enjoy chatting and hearing their stories – it really helped ease my nerves while waiting to go in!”

What she enjoys about modelling: “No two jobs are the same – I love the versatility and switching up my look to fit the vibe. Fashion lets me get creative, and I enjoy expressing that through modelling. I also love meeting like-minded creatives – photographers, models, designers – and bringing a shared vision to life on set.”

Icons she looks up to in the fashion and modelling world: "Throughout my modelling journey, I’ve drawn inspiration from many models, designers, and creatives. Since I was 12, Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine has been my icon – I love her unique vintage style, minimalist hair and makeup, and captivating aura. She definitely influenced my style from a young age. Vivienne Westwood is another icon for me – an epic fusion of individuality and boldness. I believe it’s important to be different and to showcase your true self through your style."

Future aspirations: "Modelling wasn’t something I planned growing up – I stumbled into it at 21 and instantly fell in love. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved so far, but I’m eager to take this journey further, working with bigger brands and showing what I can do. Moving to Singapore from England just three weeks ago was a big, scary step, but I’m ready to dive in and make the most of this new chapter."

A model icon she looks up to: “I look up to Alex Consani because she balances professionalism with staying true to her raw, authentic self.”

Future aspirations: “I hope to build a successful modelling career and be featured in top fashion magazines."

His style is bold and experimental – he’s often challenged by fans to wear the most unusual pieces and somehow pulls it off brilliantly. I’m amazed by how he blends different items into one striking outfit – like those unforgettable vegan leather pants he styled.”

Future aspirations: “To start, I’m open to any modelling job to break into the industry. Eventually, I’d like to do commercial gigs and even explore acting.”

FPC Basic Models Yu Yongyi
Clement Goh

Name: Yu Yongyi

Age: 24

Occupation: Full-time national serviceman

His challenges faced: "This was my third time attending Basic Model’s Open Casting. Due to National Service commitments, I haven’t had formal training or boot camps, but I keep coming back because I enjoy the atmosphere and want to prepare for future opportunities. During this session, Bonita mentioned I might have been a bit too expressive with my ideas. Honestly, I was nervous and excited, and tried to ease my anxiety by chatting – I’m usually not this talkative!"

Most memorable part of the day: "What always stands out at Basic Models’ Open Casting is how welcoming the community is. Behind the serious poses, most models are surprisingly friendly – especially Jesper, who remembered I attended last year. If I join Basic Models, I’ll definitely learn from him whenever I can. Being interviewed by FEMALE was the highlight of my day – it was my first interview ever! I might have stumbled over my words from excitement, so apologies if I misspoke.

Favourite part of modelling: "I love experimenting with unique clothes. Modelling lets me explore different personas through styling, which fits my naturally curious nature. Every new look reveals a hidden side of me, and I’m excited to dive deeper into this creative, limitless industry."

A model icon he looks up to: "Lu Xianren, the ‘Rural Supermodel,’ inspires me deeply. Raised in a Guangxi village with no resources, he taught himself runway skills using outfits made from discarded plastic bags and blankets. Despite ridicule, his relentless perseverance landed him at Paris Fashion Week within three years. His journey is a powerful reminder that passion can break all boundaries."

Future aspirations: "I’m committed to excelling as a model while stepping out of my comfort zone. I aim to grow professionally, collaborate well with teams, and embrace every chance to reinvent myself. Building meaningful connections and learning from industry peers are key, as I believe growth thrives on shared experiences."

Her biggest inspirations in fashion and modelling: "My biggest inspiration in modeling right now is Alex Consani. She brings a fresh, fearless energy to the industry with her confidence, humor, and unapologetic individuality. She shows that beauty isn’t about fitting a mold, but breaking it. As someone with an alternative style, I relate to her authenticity and boundary-pushing spirit. Her Model of the Year win only deepened my respect for her.

Fashion-wise, I’m inspired by Vivienne Westwood—an icon and rebel whose punk designs blend fashion with protest. As a musician, I connect with her raw expression, defiance, and boldness. She proved style can be loud, political, and deeply personal, and that being bold is powerful."

Future aspirations: "In the future, I hope to shoot for a magazine and collaborate with brands and creatives who value authenticity, inclusivity, and self-expression. I aspire to be part of projects that celebrate real people, real stories, and the diverse faces of beauty."
