MADDY BRETECHE LO, 27, CONTENT CREATOR
TikTok account: @maddybreteche
Started on TikTok: “Sometime in 2019.”
TikTok stats as of press time: 169.2K followers, 4.6M likes
Why know her: With her telegenic good looks, illuminating yet soothing manner of speech and a personality that’s equal parts cool and playful, she reminds us of the best, most charismatic of ’90s MTV VJs (google “Nadya Hutagalung”). Then there’s her deadpan humour, impeccable comedic timing and knack for spot-on impersonations that bring to mind modern-day Hollywood weird girl icon Aubrey Plaza. All of this comes through on her page, which she sums up as “mostly comedic skits, a smattering of beauty content, the odd book review and an occasional rant”. We think it’s about time for this French-Malaysian who lives and works here and across the causeway to get her own Netflix show.
Her background and how it’s shaped her content: “I’ve always loved watching other creators show off their comedic skills and decided one day to try it out for fun. I’ve a background in performing arts (she has a diploma in performance and bachelor’s degree in musical theatre) so being a bit dramatic and switching up my accents came pretty naturally to me. I also think people enjoy content that they can relate to – my early content was very localised, which definitely helped me grow as a creator. And people love a good rant, especially if they’ve been in the same situation.”
Her best talent: “Reading abnormally quickly”
How TikTok has helped her to nurture her creative talent: “It’s been really hard finding a job in entertainment, which is what I majored in, so I’ve been really lucky to have been able to use social media as my creative outlet instead.”
Most memorable comment she’s received on TikTok: “My mind is like a sieve. Honestly I can’t recall – sorry!”
How much of her TikTok personality is true? “I do a few skits so that’s not exactly me, but what I portray in the rest of my content is pretty much my norm.”
Number of hours she spends on her phone daily: “I spend a lot of time on my phone for work, but when it comes to fun, it’s probably an hour max.”
And how much of that time is spent on TikTok: “I haven’t doom-scrolled in ages.”
Is she active on other social media platforms too? “I’m pretty active on Instagram (@maddy.breteche), but my content on it differs slightly from that on my TikTok. I’m a lot more personable on Instagram because of Instagram stories, and I feel like the audience there is a little more invested in me instead of only my content, so I’ll talk about things such as my fitness journey, for example.”
Best thing about TikTok: “The content you get from all over the world – it’s really opened up my mind to different cultures and personalities.”
Worst thing about TikTok: “Trolls that hide behind burner accounts”
Will she continue to be on TikTok when she is older? “It’s commonly known as an app for Gen Z-ers but there are so many parents and people my age on the app. Maybe that’s just my algorithm, but yeah, I do see myself being on TikTok when I’m older. My content would just likely pivot.”
If there was no TikTok: “I would be broke and unemployed, so let’s hope it doesn’t come to that just yet.”
