The Swedish Film Festival Is Where You Should Be At This Weekend

The Swedish Film Festival makes a splashy return to indie film spot The Projector this weekend after a highly successful debut last year.

Their sophomore outing sees a total of eight films over four days (Feb 16-19), five of which focuses on the works of acclaimed Swedish director Roy Andersson (A Swedish Love Story) as well as Lukas Moodysson's We Are The Best, Karin Ekberg's A Separation, Anders Helgeson and Karin of Klintberg's Nice People. We pick out the ones you definitely shouldn't miss:

A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting Existence, 2014

Andersson's most recent work, this is the Singapore debut of the black comedy flick, which won the Gold Lion for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival. Don't come expecting a traditional storyline - it's a series of self-contained sketches loosely covers the story of a two salesmen hawking novelty fares (think vampire teeth, monster masks) and their unsuccessful sales attempts. 16 Feb, 8pm and 18 Feb, 5pm

A Swedish Love Story, 1970

The film that established Andersson as a name to watch out for, A Swedish Love Story was his feature film debut and was commercially and critically successful both locally and internationally. A sweet romantic drama, the story centers around the budding love between two teenagers despite the firm disapproval from narrow-minded adults. 19 Feb, 8pm.

We Are The Best!, 2013

What do you need to know? 1980s. A teenaged all-girl punk band. For anyone who has ever experienced ostracism (the girls in the film are shunned due to their love for punk rock), We Are The Best! is a heartwarming tribute to the tribulations of those pesky adolescent years. Feb 17, 8pm

Films aren't all you have to look forward to - design freaks should make a trip down to The Projector as well - vintage Swedish furniture specialist Mobler will be transforming the cosy space outside the theatre into a Scandinavian wonderland.
