Women In Film And Photography

Anger - derived from a sense of helplessness, at injustice, at long-term oppression and more - is naturally what a lot of marginalised communities experience when responding to ongoing social, gender, racial and economic inequality. The recent Preetipls incident was a good example. Photography and film centre Objectifs' fifth Women In Film and Photography show aims to explore how "rage against discrimination, repression and injustice can be channeled into a force for awareness, action and change through art."

It's a multi-segmented show as always, with a photography exhibit, the local debuts of five critically acclaimed films and new works by local artists, all bundled into the programming. And naturally, all the works are produced and created by women artists, such as this photograph (pictured above) shot by popular photographer Lenne Chai. And to that, we say amen. Check out the full line-up here.

Joker

Joker finally opens in Singapore this weekend after months of hype and from the sounds of early reviews, it's doing a decent job of living up to all the frothing. Directed by Todd Phillips (you might have heard of a little film called A Star Is Born), the premise sees titular character Arthur Fleck, an aspiring comedian beaten down by a brutal '80s metropolis that is Gotham City. A reflection of our similarly turbulent times? Probably. We'll have to wait to see if the joke's on us.

Joker opens Oct 3
