For the uninitiated, Celine's monogram design is based on a 1972 archival motif that took its design cues from the chains encircling Paris' Arc de Triomphe. Hedi Slimane resurrected the pattern in brown canvas for a series of leather goods in 2019 which has since grown into a key element of many Celine's bags today.

This month, Celine is giving that patterned motif a 'noir' reboot with the debut of the Triomphe Embroidery line. Gone is the brown canvas with the stamped monogram and in its place is a made-in-Italy black embroidered monogram on an ecru linen-cotton canvas.

Available on four bag styles – the Triomphe shoulder bag, the drum-shaped Tambour, the Cabas Vertical and the Cabas Horizontal – and a series of small leather goods, the bags boast a sophisticated polish thanks to the embroidered pattern while still retaining its overall vintage appeal.

Already, we've spotted stars from Celine's global brand ambassador Lisa of Blackpink to Chinese idols like Fu Jing and Yutong Zhou flexing their designer bag game with the Triomphe Embroidery in tow. Proving to us that a black and white combination is always a critic's choice.
