The ties between Dior and Japan run deep. The staircase in house founder Christian Dior’s childhood home in Granville, France, was flanked by panels painted with Japanese motifs, kindling his fascination with the Land of the Rising Sun. In Fall Winter 1952, he even named one of the dresses for the Christian Dior‑New York line Tokio. He was also the first Western couturier to release his collections in Japan, working with local artisanal fabric houses to create models based on his patterns. More creations inspired by this Eastern culture would follow through the maison’s evolution – from Marc Bohan to John Galliano to Maria Grazia Chiuri. Now, for Fall 2025, Chiuri revisits the country and the kimono‑influenced coats Dior came up with in 1957, and brings a whole new, decidedly urban spin to everyday Japanese style.

It's only fitting that when Chiuri was planning to revisit Japan for Dior Magazine 50, photographer Hiromix's name came up. Before there were Instagram influencers, the camerawoman was the OG 90s Japanese it-girl. The Tokyo-born photographer’s influence was huge around the country, so much that it initiated the ‘Hiromix Syndrome’ where girls in Japan borrowed her point-and-shoot style. Then high school student Hiromix led the wave of snapshooters in the mid 1990s, sharing candid moments of her day-to-day life as a teenage girl. Her photography offered a new perspective of young girls: unapologetic, undone, and totally real, diverging from the prevailing cute girl aesthetic which was formed by the male gaze. Her works shaped the identity of 90s Japanese female youth culture, celebrating girlhood and female expression decades earlier than many who came before and after her.
