Created by the late London-based stylist Ray Petri in the ’80s, the aesthetic drew from a rebellious mishmash of native American, Jamaican rude boy, and dandy cultures. Exaggerated, slightly eccentric versions of classic hats were almost always a must – a look revived this F/W ’17 by brands as wide ranging as Marc Jacobs to Gucci to Coach. Petri was equally forward-thinking when it came to his models, plucking alternative youths and creatives off the streets. As a tribute, we got local knit and dreadlocks artist Kelly “Limerick” Lim and pal Sybil Teo to help us show off some of this season’s standout toppers.

Your Boots Need To Glitter
From left, clockwise:
Chanel’s “moon boots”
Each pair has been sprayed with what the brand claims to be 540,000 specks of glitter (yes, seriously) so as to mimic the effect of stardust. Leather, $2,280
Saint Laurent’s Niki boots
The rhinestones you see on this Rihanna-approved style have been individually embroidered on by hand – a couture technique the brand first used in 1973. Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello leather and organza, $15,120
Loewe’s “neo-Chelsea” boots
To achieve a smooth finish, the brand covered the shoes not in sequins, but sequinned fabric. Clever, no? Goatskin and cotton, $950
Put Your Money On A Perennial With A Twist
When do forward-thinking, fashion-loving women appreciate designers being safe? When they too want to be safe, what with the economic slowdown that threatens to worsen. Of course, that shouldn’t equate to boring wardrobes. The good news is that brands are well clued in on this, remixing familiar styles instead of shocking with the new. Even better news is that there are plenty of such options when it comes to what most women spend on: a bag.
The Sella tote from Tod’s gets an equestrian touch in the form of supple quilting in suede and nappa leather. From left: Sella leather and suede tote, $3,400, and matching nappa leather tote, $4,010, Tod’s
An otherwise vintage-tinged bucket bag style gets an architectural twist with Bao Bao Issey Miyake’s signature triangular panels. Lander PVC bucket bags, $1,390 each, Bao Bao Issey Miyake
The new Mademoiselle Longchamp blends a quintessential ’70s hobo design with modern perforation and a quirky enamel-finished wax seal on its side tag. Mademoiselle Longchamp calfskin hobo bags, $1,955 each, Longchamp
Industrial-style grommets and a leather weave make the structured Dinky one of the most eclectic bags around this season. Top and middle: Coach 1941 Colorblock Link Dinky leather shoulder bags, $1,100 each. Bottom: Coach 1941 Exotic Link Dinky leather and snakeskin shoulder bag, $1,400. All Coach
