Something must be in the air at Milan Fashion Week. At Prada, models wore nothing but bras and skirts. At Diesel, models made out with each other. Now, even Maria Grazia Chiuri is getting in on the action with Fendi’s Spring Summer 2027 show, titled “I like my body when it is with your body”.

The name comes from an erotic poem by the American poet, E. E. Cummings. “This poem by Cummings made me reflect a lot on the idea of sensuality,” shared Chiuri on the inspiration of her latest collection, which was presented in Fendi’s Milan headquarters. The runway was transformed into a spectacular hall of mirrors; celebrity guests like Maisie Williams, Iris Law and Stray Kids Bang Chan watched the show from the other side of the glass.

The show set was a nod to a major moment in Italian pop culture: the sensational performance of Prisencolinensinainciusol by Italian singers Adriano Celentano and Raffaella Carrà in 1974, which featured a troupe of stylish dancers grooving in a theatre of mirrors. The catchy song, composed of gibberish lyrics that sound like English, soundtracked Fendi’s runway show.

“Raffaella’s performance with Celentano was an exhilarating collective dance pervaded by this vitality, bodies that work and perform in an incredible way,” said Chiuri. The designer named Carrà as her muse this season: the Italian actress, singer and dancer, who famously sported a blonde bob, became a household name in Europe and Latin America in the ‘70s.

“She had a great fashion sense and I believe that this had an influence on the concept of femininity and thus also on the Fendi sisters,” explained Chiuri. “Raffaella Carra was certainly in some way, a mirror for an entire generation.”

Ahead, see how Carra’s singular style informed Fendi’s Spring Summer 2027 show at Milan Fashion Week.

The spirit of the 70s

Fendi’s Spring Summer 2027 show was defined by relaxed, fluid silhouettes – a departure from the prim, ladylike styles and tailoring that we saw in Chiuri’s debut Fendi collection. The designer captured the spirit of the freedom-loving ‘70s – the decade that marked Carra’s rise, as well as Chiuri’s youth – with the collection’s flowy black dresses, loose trousers and the fringing seen on bags and blouses. Shirts were worn open, and dresses fluttered as models walked. The idea of lightness was also seen in the colours: Chiuri broke her all-black colour palette to include pops of dusty pink, butter yellow and mint blue.

A game of peekaboo

“We began with conversations on undergarments, and that which sits closest to our bodies,” said Chiuri about the collection. True enough, the opening looks featured plenty of lingerie, including sheer slip dresses and silky, lace-trimmed bras paired with matching shorts. But these looks weren’t strictly for the boudoir: they were layered with coats and fur stoles that swung as models made their sultry walk down the mirrored runway. What emerged was the image of a sexually liberated woman – much like Carra, who celebrated her sexuality in her music and performances. The pop star’s wardrobe was referenced more directly later at the Fendi show, as models came out in black dresses with studs and cut-outs.

All that glitters

Carra’s stage costumes saw no shortage of glitter, sequins and rhinestones. Accordingly, Chiuri added a good dose of glitz to her collection with statement pieces like wide sequin pants (both for him and her), a sparkling romper, and a draped, metallic silver gown. Several models also donned a crystal-embellished bandana, inspired by Carra’s look on the cover of her 1976 album, Forte forte forte.

Animal instinct

Animal prints, with all their connotations of rebellion and sexual freedom, figured heavily in the collection. They appeared on jackets, coats and the new Fendi Baguette bags. There was even a spectacular velvet jacquard gown woven with leopard spots. The Fendi men, meanwhile, sauntered down the runway clad in intarsia fur gilets and jackets layered over breezy white shirts – to powerful effect.

Chiuri’s Fendi collection was already full of surprises, with its sense of lightness and sexiness. But the Italian designer also injected a youthful energy that we hadn’t seen in her Fendi shows before: the collection featured her fur-trimmed take on the Napoleon jacket, a staple among trendy Gen Z-ers. Those ornate pieces, as well as the fabulous Fendi furs, were worn with more casual, everyday pieces, like white tank tops and blue jeans. By following their “anything goes” approach to dressing, Chiuri makes it clear: Fendi is for the girls and the boys, too.
