Former FemaleGP Winner Yu Ran Hong On How To Ace An OOTD & His Style Icon

As we celebrate Female GP’S 20th anniversary this year, we’re back on the lookout for Singapore’s next big fashion star – the most stylish trendsetters who live and breathe fashion. Here, last year's winner Yu Ran Hong chats about his signature style, how to ace an OOTD and why he loves Dries Van Noten.

What he’s been up to since winning FemaleGP Best Dressed Edition last year

“I'm now a visual merchandiser and marketing executive for Vans Singapore. I grew up wearing Vans, so working for such an iconic brand has been an exciting journey for me.”

His favourite designer now

“Dries Van Noten is my favourite designer - now and always. I love his opulent fabrics and innovative draping techniques. I like my clothes with a little slouch and his garments are like moving pieces of art. I never bought into the whole normcore genre of dressing. I want my clothes to be alive and full of contradiction.”

How to ace an OOTD

“I think it’s more than just a cool outfit. You’ve got to have a good backdrop, pay attention to composition and have a different point of view.”

On why he loves fashion

“Fashion is like a language. You can learn new words along the way; you should stay away from big words you don't know how to use; and should never be crude or vulgar. And if all else fails, create a whole new language that only you can understand.”

His style icon

“The French model and author Caroline de Maigret (below). She is unashamedly androgynous and very French.”

On his sartorial evolution

“Over the years, I've started to choose comfort over aesthetics. I need clothes that are functional and transitional. I tend to invest in things that I can see myself wearing for the next 10 years instead of the look of the season.”
