The New Look: “Culturally Appropriate”
From Left: Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior
Chanel goes big on Greek antiquity with Athenian dresses complete with gilded coin buttons and headbands. Louis Vuitton blends old and modern Japanese art by translating inky landscape paintings into the weave on jacquard suits, and Kansai Yamamoto’s flamboyance into accessories. Dior pays tribute to the raw beauty of Wild West America with Georgia O’Keeffe-worthy jackets and Zorro-style hats. Resort 2018’s exuberant interpretation of folk costume gets unusually literal, but – rather than feeling tacky – brings back some much needed fun and glamour in dressing up.
The Makeover: The Non-Ironic Bazar Bag
For anyone who’s thought of Balenciaga’s controversial market-style tote as a gimmick, its endurance (five seasons and counting) and practical adaptations (five sizes) ought to indicate otherwise. This F/W ’17 sees it getting its most sophisticated updates that would appeal even to detractors: from perennially chic monochrome strips, to the pretty prints originally used on the collection’s made-to-order (ie not as accessible) dresses. In calfskin (above), or silk and lambskin (all others), prices unavailable
The Hot Thongs... For Your Feet
Leather slippers with feathers, and cotton midi skirt, Dior.
Coming out from under the office desk like mandals and pool slides years ago, the humble flip-flop is going through a style renaissance for Resort with luxurious – and sometimes over-the-top – updates. Take Dior’s, which are made of leather and adorned with plumage, or Valentino’s in rubber with mink fur straps, and even high street renditions that come swathed in statement crystals – all dressy enough to pair with ballgowns and pretty frocks. To mangle a famous lyric, it’s about time you let them see that thong.
Rubber slippers with crystals, $39, Guess. Velvet midi skirt, $395, Sandro.
Uzurii rubber slippers with crystals, $189, Pedder On Scotts. Embroidered tulle midi dress, $109, H&M.
