How do you encapsulate a sense of bravery through fashion? Perhaps the fictitious Miu Miu Mountain Club that Miuccia Prada imagined for Fall/Winter 2021 holds the clues as to how women can and should venture out into the unknown with courage.

Inspired by the fits worn by alpine adventurers, Miu Miu's ready-to-wear collection this season is an ode to clothes that protect, what with its ultra chic take on puffer jackets, padded suits and other utilitarian accessories. That's not to say that it's all cover-ups – there are also the likes of studded lingerie-inspired pieces, sequinned dresses and even sporty, '80s rap-influenced separates. The woman who dares is after all a multi-dimensional one.

Just ask homegrown musician Aisyah Aziz. This month alone, the honey-voiced multi-hyphenate will release her first vinyl as well as see the launch of a zombie-themed series that she stars in. Couple that with how her profile as a fashion star with a taste for experimentation has been on the rise and one can say that the 27-year-old has got the art of reinvention down pat.

Revolving around the romance of venturing outside of one’s comfort zone and embarking on bold adventures, Miu Miu’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection offers up plenty of statement-making contrasts such as slip dresses embellished with crystals and spiky studs.

Besides being Miuccia Prada’s idea of battle gear, they’re a nod to her personal penchant for wearing slips while skiing on warmer days. “It looks strange, but in the end, it’s not,” says the ever-idiosyncratic fashion doyenne.

Chic and elegance are as central to keeping warm in this Miu Miu collection with wool knits given an artful charm with handmade crochet patterns inspired by those on classic winter sweaters. Also in the spotlight: the flirty-meets-glamorous Miu Belle bag, which was introduced last year and sports a sophisticated matelasse leather finish, polished metal frame and glossy oversized black clasp.

Yes, one can – and should – dazzle in challenging times too, says Miuccia Prada. Accenting this delightful collection of contrasts: fun yet luxurious winter accessories such as cashmere-lined mittens and yeti boots crafted out of fake fur as part of Miu Miu’s sustainability strategy.

One of the season’s key footwear styles, the Splitboard boots, is inspired by those used for splitboarding – an off-shoot of snowboarding. Its hooks and eyelets are similar to those on trekking shoes; its chain embellishments an ode to Run DMC style; and its chunky soles are made from an innovative EVA material so that they’re exceptionally light.

Trust Miuccia Prada to also fuse something as irreverent as ’80s rapper fashion with mountaineer dressing, explaining the slightly retro and oversized silhouettes of some of the lightweight, quilted nylon coats.
