Molly Goddard's physical return to London Fashion Week this Fall 2022 season was markedly triumphant, her models looking like splashes of colour against the minimalism of an elevated runway and rows on rows of white benches.

Inspired by the vintage goldmines that are the Portobello and Camden markets in London, this collection veered away from Goddard's typically more youthful and innocent flair towards an edgier feel – think her signature tulle skirts layered beneath oversized sweaters and models wearing uglycore platforms instead of pumps.

"The overall look is eclectic, here’s-what-I-found-down-the-market," Goddard said in her show notes.

Ahead, some of our notes from the runway.

DENIM GOES PUNK

Denim? Yawn. Printed denim? Getting there. Printed, frayed denim? We're obsessed! Frayed denim on Goddard's skirts and dress add a literal raw edge to the look, evoking the very much punk sentiments of the '70s and '80s.

A HAPPY CONTRADICTION

It's safe to say that no one strictly subscribes to one particular style aesthetic, especially in a post-Covid setting. Goddard's mish-mash of girly textiles and masculine garments create fresh silhouettes for the eye, inviting more intrigue with heightened dimension. It's easy enough to experiment layering with existing pieces in your own closet.

THE ANTI-PRETTY TULLE

3/5

Are any of us surprised? Tulle remains a mainstay in Goddard's repertoire — but not without some zhushing. This season, it's used more so to juxtapose against masculine garments like blazers and sweaters or to add more structure to a silhouette. They're found at the bottom of a dropped waist for added drama.

THE HIGHER THE HAIR, THE CLOSER TO HEAVEN

Ben Broomfield
4/5

Almost every model down the runway sported the highest possible ponytails their hair could possibly hold. It's clear that there's no oil or serum involved in the process — rather than the modern slicked-back look, the charm of this hairstyle lies in its off-kilter, "I-don't-really-care" vibe.

DARKER THAN BLACK EYES

5/5

Another beauty trend following us into the Fall season is the graphic black eyeliner. It's one of the most versatile eye makeup looks out there. Dress it up with a bold red lip or tone it down with a neutral colour palette, there's no right or wrong here. Goddard did both!
