When: September 16, 2024

Where: The National Theatre, a Brutalist architectural building in the heart of central London, provides an epic contrast to the summery outdoor collection. However, it also serves as a great complement to the modernist set designed by leading painters and sculptors, Gary Hume. Inspired by Hume's 1990 installation, Bays, the set echoes the clinical design of hospital doors. This Burberry show marked the first time Hume has resurrected that work since its original showing.

Gary Hume, a prominent figure in 1990s British art, designed the set for the Burberry Summer 2025 show.

The takeaway: Two years into his tenure at Burberry, chief creative officer Daniel Lee has further solidified his vision for the brand. In this 51-look outing, he continues to double down on Burberry's iconic outerwear, trench coats, and carefree outdoor spirit. While the collection remains lightweight and breezy, Lee's sophisticated artistry shines through in deconstructed trenches and cropped rainwear.

The iconic house check is prominently featured on jackets, trousers, and bags in various materials, including linen cotton, silk viscose, and chainmail. For a more wearable touch, Lee has introduced relaxed trousers with ankle buttons and weathered outerwear. These elements draw on Burberry's rich heritage of fabric innovation, echoing the brand's revolutionary gabardine fabric introduced in 1879.

While Lee's approach for 2025 is admittedly more restrained, toning down the whimsy and quirkiness of previous collections, his focus on Burberry's core strengths remains unwavering. This strategic shift aligns with the brand's new direction under the leadership of former Michael Kors CEO Joshua Schulman. As Burberry navigates a challenging luxury market, the true test of this transformation will come in the coming months when the collection hits store shelves.

Will Lee's refined approach resonate with Burberry's loyal customer base? Only time will tell, but the early signs suggest that this evolution is a natural progression for the iconic brand. Burberry 2.0, as it were, is poised to redefine luxury outerwear and casual elegance.
