We take a peek inside the bags of working Gen Zs hustling to, quite literally, secure the bag – uncovering the essentials they swear by and the must-haves that bridge the gap between creative chaos and corporate chic.

“My first ‘big girl’ purchase as an intern at Beastcorp in 2022 – a 2012 Balenciaga Work Bag. I snagged it on Vestiaire Collective for $600, just before the Balenciaga Le City revival took off. I needed something to haul everything – and she delivers. She’s been through the trenches with me (literally), to the point where I’ve had to stitch her up a few times… oops.”

What do you carry around on a regular day?
“A laptop (I know, not the best treatment for designer bags), a book, two pairs of headphones, my diary and planner, a makeup pouch, a Union Jack lighter (for luck), sunglasses, earphones, a foldable fan, a thumb drive, five bajillion receipts… and yet, somehow, there’s never room for a portable charger or water bottle – both of which I desperately need.”
What’s your 9-5 and 5-9 like?
“My 9-5 varies week to week – I could be at my desk brainstorming content ideas, running around on shoots, or even hosting events. My 5-9 is more predictable, though, as I usually spend it watching films and reading. Lately, I’ve been pushing myself to stay creative each week, so I illustrate, sew, write, and work on graphic design projects in my free time.”
Apart from your phone, what would you go back for if you left it at home?
“My work laptop… I check my bag almost obsessively to make sure it’s always with me.”

“It’s a Loewe Small Cubi bag that my parents co-sponsored for my 21st. They’d sworn off buying me any more bags when I turned 20, so I had to chip in a bit to seal the deal – I covered about 15 per cent of the $1.8K price tag at the time. I guess this is the first bag I (kind of) bought with my own money.
It may look small, but you’d be surprised at how much it fits. I can easily squeeze in a small umbrella and a portable charger on top of everything else, which is a massive plus. Honestly, I surprise myself every time I pack this bag – it truly serves. It also reminds me that I’m more than what meets the eye. #wordsofaffirmation”

“I carry a lot of essentials that keep me feeling prepared and polished. Tissues (I’m a Cloversoft fan, and their mini packs are perfect for small bags), mints (stored in a Bedazzled My Melody candy case), and a spoolie for my lash extensions (my cutest lash tech got me special ones with My Melody on them). I also keep dental floss on hand – PR girlie always needs to talk, and just in case I have a scrumptious meal, I’ll need to get rid of the evidence.
My LV cardholder/wallet, which I've had for eight years, is a staple. Despite buying other wallets, I keep coming back to it because it's compact and can hold up to seven or eight cards. I always have a perfume on hand too – Veil from Melt Season, which I keep in a small, easy-to-carry bottle. Oh, and My Melody hair clips and a pill case (it holds my supplements and Bounceback).
Other essentials include a charging cable, AirPods, Malin + Goetz lip balm (buy here on Sephora), Byredo rinse-free hand cleanser, and Aesop hand cream. I also carry my Chanel Rouge Coco Balm in shade #112 Opportunity (the name empowers me – whenever I look at it, I’m ready to conquer the world). For touch-ups, I rely on Espoir’s cushion foundation – compact and effective. And of course, Bandaids (but the cute ones). Finally, I carry Officine Universelle Buly’s comb, which makes me feel like a Gongjunim every time I use it.”
What's your 9-5 and 5-9 like?
“My 9-5 is exactly what you’d call the ‘PR girlie’ job. Think Emily in Paris – the pitches, events, and campaigns that Emily and her pals at Agence Grateau juggle, but with all the unglamorous behind-the-scenes chaos.
After work, my parents usually pick me up (living my best passenger princess life while I can), and we have dinner at home before winding down. On other nights, I head out for drinks and catch up with friends. Yes, it’s reassuring to know my nightlife still exists, and somehow, I still manage to show up for work the next day!”
Apart from your phone, what would you go back for if you left it at home?
“Definitely my AirPods – I’m not a fan of silence when I commute. Even if I’m observing the world around me, I prefer doing it with some music. The songs I listen to really help set the mood. If I’m heading to a meeting and need to feel badass, the right song is like a mini pep talk in my ears.”

“I believe this is the Coach Hamptons shoulder tote bag from the early 2000s – it’s actually my mom’s from when I was a kid, so the bag and I are pretty much the same age. I’m a sucker for brown bags, and the front belt design on this one is a special touch.
To me, this is a timeless piece that goes with just about anything. I can carry it as a handbag or a shoulder bag, depending on my mood. I instantly fell in love with it when I found it in my mom’s closet, and it’s been by my side ever since.”

What do you carry around on a regular day?
“My bag is full of essentials that keep me going throughout the day. I’ve got a pouch with miscellaneous beauty products like a foldable comb, lippies, sun stick, cream blush, perfume, and mouthwash. I try to remember my vitamins daily and always carry a mini tripod – because you never know when you’ll find the perfect background for a fit check video, and I sometimes head to brand events after work, so it’s a must. My Sony RX100 camera is always on hand to capture beautiful moments, and a portable charger is essential since I’m constantly on my phone, overworking its battery. AirPods are a must for my daily music fix on the way to and from work. I also never leave without an umbrella, especially since moving to Singapore – the weather is so unpredictable. And yes, I still carry a cardholder, mostly for brand vouchers and membership cards because, let’s be honest, I need those points and discounts.”
What's your 9-5 and 5-9 like?
“My 9-5 is usually pretty standard – I sit in front of my laptop and get things done. But when the sunlight hits just right in the afternoon, I can’t resist rushing to grab some of our jewellery to capture it sparkling under the light (sooo pretty!). Occasionally, customers make appointments to come in, and I get to have great conversations with them while they try on the bling!
After work, I sometimes meet my boyfriend or girl pals for dinner and drinks, or I head to a brand event if I can make it. Most nights, my housemate and I like to cook dinner at home and unwind with some Nintendo. And guess what? I finally beat her at Mario Kart the other day.”
Apart from your phone, what would you go back for if you left it at home?
“Probably my umbrella. I’ve been caught in the rain too many times, and recently, I’ve started to appreciate using it under the sun as well.”

What do you carry around on a regular day?
“I’m a very practical person, so I don’t carry much. Usually, I have my laptop, tablet, chargers, notebook, a lippie or two, hard drive, phone, glasses, perfume balm, sanitizer, sinus/allergy meds, Strepsils, and my keys.”
What's your 9-5 and 5-9 like?
“I can never just do one thing at a time, so I often freelance alongside my day job—guess that makes me a workaholic. Since design work keeps me desk-bound, I like to hit events or squeeze in a workout afterward.”
Apart from your phone, what would you go back for if you left it at home?
“My glasses... I’ve forgotten them way too many times already.”

“I got this bag specifically for my 45-day overseas trip to Japan with my best friend, where I’d be juggling work, cafe-hopping, and outdoor adventures. One moment, I’d be sketching in a cosy cafe, the next, I could be hiking in Tokyo, rafting down the Hozugawa River, or admiring Mount Fuji. I needed something that could fit my essentials – especially my 12-inch iPad Pro, which is my livelihood – while still being versatile enough for all the activities.
I’ve always preferred sling bags, but this one stands out because it easily converts into a backpack while still looking stylish. It has a sleek, edgy look, and to add a personal touch, I clip on a silver metal butterfly chain across the strap, blending grunge and delicate aesthetics with a futuristic, Y2K-inspired vibe.”
What do you carry around on a regular day?
“On a regular day, I carry my AirPods, iPad Pro 12”, and The Artist’s Way book. I always have a portable charger, some sweets, lip balm, and a handy pouch with me. My essentials also include a pencil, pen, Muji notebook, and a phone stand. I never leave without my Insta 360 cam, tripod for the cam, a few necklaces, and a hair tie.”
What's your 9-5 and 5-9 like?
“I don’t have a traditional 9-5 schedule – I structure my day around my energy levels and the type of work I need to do. As an illustrator, my workflow typically looks like this:
From 10am to 1pm, I focus on deep work, tackling creative client projects. Around 1-4pm, the food coma kicks in, so I shift to passion projects or anything that keeps me moving, like sketching or brainstorming new ideas.
Between 5-7pm, I handle admin tasks – emails, logistics, planning, and dinner. From 8-11pm, I focus on editing content and reels. Then, from 12-2am, I get back to creating art, which is when I feel most inspired.
Midweek, I meet up with my creative friends at a cafe to draw, get inspired, and film content. I also dedicate two days a week to freelance client work and ad-hoc projects. On exercise days, I start with two yoga classes, spend the afternoon drawing at a cafe, and end the night with two dance classes. This flexibility helps me balance creativity, movement, and social inspiration throughout my week.”

"I’m using the Goodtotes Large Croissant Sling, which I got from their TikTok shop for $59.90. I chose this bag because it was advertised as being able to fit a lot – and it really does! I managed to pack in my work uniform, a 32oz Owala bottle, my Kindle, mini snacks, lippies, and more. One of my favourite features is the built-in key holder, which is super handy since I no longer have to dig through my bag to find my keys!"

What do you carry around on a regular day?
“I carry my home and bike keys, work uniform (since I don’t like to ride in it), work pass, and access card. Being a bookworm, I always have my Kindle with me in case I get some free time to read during my break – it also feels like an emotional support item. My Airpods are a must-have for hyping myself up before work, and I either throw them in my bag or attach them to the key ring. I keep lip gloss and balm in the ¼ pockets to keep my lips moisturised, along with any medication I might need. Lastly, I always have my wallet on hand. “
What's your 9-5 and 5-9 like?
“My morning shift is from 7am to 4pm, and it’s mainly focused on reporting, managing medications, handling doctor changes, and then handing over responsibilities. Once I’m done with work, I usually go home and end up being unproductive – either napping or reading before spending some time with my family. On some days, I opt to hang out with friends after work. The afternoon shift starts late for me, as I usually sleep in. From 1pm to 10pm, my work follows the same routine. When I get home, I shower, try to squeeze in some reading, and then sleep. This is the shift I dislike the most because I miss out on family time.”
Apart from your phone, what would you go back for if you left it at home?
“My Kindle! I’m so attached to it that I can't go anywhere without it.”

“I got this Mod Flap Bag from Lecc Project for $109 because of its practicality and compact design. It fits all my office essentials – especially my MacBook 14” – without looking bulky. There’s a small pocket at the back, perfect for easy access to things like my earpiece and office pass.
Thanks to its flap and waterproof material, everything inside stays protected, even if it rains. You can wear it as a crossbody or carry it as a shoulder bag, making it incredibly versatile.”
What do you carry around on a regular day?
“I always carry my laptop, planner, and a vanity pouch that holds all my essentials – hand sanitiser, hand cream, medicine, mirror, tissues, wet wipes, lipsticks, plasters, a stain remover pen, hair tie, and roller perfume. I also have a pencil case, a notebook, earpieces, a storybook, my wallet, and spectacles in my bag.”
What's your 9-5 and 5-9 like?
“My 9-5 usually goes like this: As soon as I arrive at the office, I grab an iced Americano, settle in, and prioritize my tasks for the day before getting started. I like to split my workday into two parts. In the first part, I focus on tasks that require less mental energy, such as clearing emails, doing research, and proofreading ad copies. After lunch, I dive into creative work – editing, scriptwriting, and blog writing.
As a professional homebody, my 5-9 is spent at home, where I cook dinner and prep lunch for the next day. I hit the gym about two to three times a week and unwind by playing music, watching YouTube videos, or catching up on Netflix.”
Apart from your phone, what would you go back for if you left it at home?
“Honestly, I wouldn’t even head back for my phone if it weren’t for Microsoft Authenticator. But if I really had to go back for something, it would be my earpiece. I love listening to music during my commute”

“It’s an MM6 tote bag that I received as a gift. To be honest, at first, I thought the shape was super weird and left it unused for months. But when I finally decided to give it a try, I grew to love the silhouette – it really adds to my look. Fun fact: I actually flipped it inside out because I couldn’t see anything with the black lining and kept struggling to find my things (the original outer is printed). Then I realised – oh, it actually works better this way. I love that it’s completely black and has a quieter, more understated vibe.”

What do you carry around on a regular day?
“I’ve got my water bottle (placed in a dustbag to prevent scratches), wallet, tissues, wet wipes, spectacle case, lip product(s), perfume decant(s), eyedrops, and earbuds.”
What's your 9-5 and 5-9 like?
“I spend my time ideating shoot concepts, set design, wardrobe styling – basically working with the team from pre- to post-production. Usually, it’s quite late when I get home, and I either grab some snacks and floor time, or shower immediately and get comfy in bed. Then I’ll scroll through my phone for entertainment and maybe chat with a couple of people or so.”
Apart from your phone, what would you go back for if you left it at home?

“I thrifted this bag in Malacca last year, and it’s been my go-to bag ever since. I think I got it for around $10, and the tag on the inside says Eclamour, so I guess that’s the brand. I love using it because it fits a lot of things, has plenty of compartments, and is easy to style. Plus, I love that it has little metal feet at the bottom – perfect since I tend to plop my bag on the floor a lot.”
What do you carry around on a regular day?
“I carry a little pouch that holds my lip balm, eye drops, contacts, a comb, hair tie, and more. My iPad is always with me since I do most of my work on it. I’ve had my cat pouch wallet for four years now, and it has a small acrylic keychain collection and my favourite pocket multi-tool. Depending on the day and the job I'm on, I carry a measuring tape, but I prefer the smallest one because it’s the lightest. I also keep a pair of Loop earplugs in a tiny fanny pack, and my Airpods are stored in a cute little mouse pouch my friend got me from Vietnam. Lastly, I always try to have an umbrella with me due to Singapore’s unpredictable weather.”
What's your 9-5 and 5-9 like?
“It’s funny – I work freelance, but somehow end up working 24/7. Most prep days start around 9 or 10 am and end around 10 or 11 pm, if we're lucky. Those days are spent sourcing props, scouting locations, and sometimes fabricating rigs or specific props. Then it's off to shoot, which can last anywhere from 10 to 15 or 16 hours, depending on the project. Whenever I get some downtime, though, I’m either resting, meeting friends, or crafting – my usual go-tos being crochet, knitting, and chainmail.”
Apart from your phone, what would you go back for if you left it at home?
“Probably my AirPods or headphones. I can't make it through a workday without some music.”

"My current work bag is the Lululemon Canvas Tote Bag. I used to swear by the Longchamp Le Pliage, but my parents recently gifted me this one, and I absolutely love it. The size is perfect for carrying both my work essentials and gym clothes. I also love how structured it is and how many pockets it has inside to keep everything separated and organized. Plus, the two-tone beige makes it super easy to match with whatever I’m wearing to the office."

What do you carry around on a regular day?
“I hate the feeling of dread when I leave home and realise I’ve forgotten something, so I make sure to carry all the essentials with me. Some things I carry on an everyday basis include an umbrella, as the weather in Singapore can be so unpredictable, and I like to walk most places. I also bring my e-reader and AirPods to keep me entertained on my commute. I always have girly essentials like hair ties, lip gloss, hair clips, gum, and an eyebrow wand. If I want to film something but don’t have my tripod, I carry an Octobuddy. I also keep a handheld fan and sunnies for when it isn’t raining but I’m baking in the sun. Finally, I always have a pair of workout clothes for my lunchtime activities if it's a workday.”
What's your 9-5 and 5-9 like?
"I work a pretty standard 9-6 in Singapore as a digital marketer, managing the EU, UK, and US markets for my company. A typical day for me always includes lots of emails, a meeting or two, ensuring our websites are running smoothly, and a lunchtime workout – which is key to keeping my energy up for the afternoon!
After work, I usually meet up with friends, cook a yummy dinner, or sometimes attend PR/networking events. I think making plans after work is so important to fill your cup! It’s easy to get caught up in the work-eat-sleep cycle, so I love having things to look forward to in the evening."
Apart from your phone, what would you go back for if you left it at home?
"My water bottle or my Kobo e-reader."
