Main Character Florals: Dial Up The Drama With Loud, Statement-Making Prints
Marimekko’s Fall Winter 2025 collection revisits an archival print, alongside two other graphics that just hit differently.
By F ZINE STAFF,
Florals aren’t just for soft moods or quiet days. They can be loud, unapologetic, and the kind of print that takes over a room before you even say a word.
That’s the energy Marimekko harvests in Anatomy of a Flower, its latest Fall Winter 2025 collection: archival blooms recast as bright, bold statements, no longer fading into the background but taking centre stage.
The collection’s palette swings between broody winter nights – pale blue, cocoa brown, spruce green, rich purple, deep grey – and party-starting jolts of scarlet, blush pink and spearmint. It’s a split mood that feels fresh, and a natural follow-up to Spring Summer 2025’s budding sprouts and blooms.
In the Fall Winter 2025 collection, it’s the withering cold-weather flowers that take centre stage.
Past Prints, Fresh Cuts
Marimekko’s founder, Armi Ratia, adored flowers but had no patience for the dainty wallpaper florals of her era. She wanted prints that bloomed with a bigger mood – and Finnish designer Maija Isola delivered. Her Unikko print from 1964, a poppy so oversized and stripped back, immediately achieved icon status.
Unikko may be well-known, but it is just one of more than 3,500 prints by Marimekko since 1951. The Fall Winter 2025 collection turns to this archive, reworking a selection of lesser-known designs for today.
Tumma’s oversized petals sprawl across dresses and knits.
The hero is Tumma (1970), Isola’s high-key floral that sprawls in dark, shadowy petals, while Basso (1975) pares things back to stark diagonals.
Basso’s stark diagonals cut clean lines through softer silhouettes.
The fabrics themselves, however, don’t look back. Some 98 per cent of the collection’s ready-to-wear pieces are cut from organic, recycled or otherwise innovative materials. Kioski, Marimekko’s streetwear-inspired line launched in 2020, pushes further by looping leftover fabric into new Risut tees.
Your Year-End Holiday Wardrobe, Cultivated
While most winter wardrobes lean on survival basics or sparkle-heavy holiday looks, Marimekko flips that around, seeding everyday silhouettes with prints that burst brighter than sequins.
This season’s pick of the crop: utilitarian jackets, chunky knits, minidresses (aka Mariminis) and padded outerwear. What ties them together isn’t just silhouette, but print.
These Mariminis bring party energy now, and wardrobe-staple status year-round.
Tumma springs up on jackets and knits, its oversized petals turning basics into statements. Wear the jacket tossed over a beaten-up hoodie, or the knit thrown on with gym shorts – effortless pairings where the print does the heavy lifting.
Basso cuts through the softer shapes like shears. A pleated skirt looks sharper clashed against Tumma blooms, a menswear shirt feels less buttoned-up once it’s tucked into beat-up denim, and the turtleneck only relaxes when a metallic Gratha bag slices across it like a flash of foil.
The metallic Gratha accessories deliver instant shine in red, silver, or black.
Metallics, in fact, become their own story. The Gratha family – in red, silver, or black – is your extroverted plus-one come party season, or the first sprout of shine for anyone easing in.
The Mariminis don’t wilt either. In the day, layer one over trousers, like the slouchy Maridenim, with loafers and keep moving. At night, switch to tights and earrings, and suddenly the same dress becomes something party-ready. The silhouette stays easy, which is exactly how the print can take over.
Inside the Marimekko boutique, everyday silhouettes are cultivated in print.
Outerwear comes in fiery red, soft brown or charcoal, designed with winter in mind. A boucle and mouline bomber jacket catches the eye with its textured surface. Even the Unikko scarves and Vihkiruusu hats aren’t just cold-weather add-ons either – they’re functional layers that come through loudly in Marimekko’s archive prints.
The Fall Winter 2025 collection from Marimekko proves one thing: One floral or stripe is all you need to define a look, strong enough to hold its own against tartans and spots alike.
