The Updated Trench Coat Everyone Will Be Wearing This Season
Spring/Summer 2017's "borrowed from the boys" womenswear collections have re-invented the trench coat. We break down how it's been refreshed on the runway and on the streets and what you can score in stores.

On the runway
Hot on the S/S '17 runway: Trench coats with boxy shoulders, cut-outs and a slouchy silhouette. Hermes' dusky pink version lent a feminine touch, while Balenciaga's '80s inspired take gave off androgynous vibes. Celine's checkered trench, meanwhile, subverted the coat's conventional purpose (i.e. to keep oneself warm) by adding cut-out panels on each side.
But it was at Marc Jacobs that the trench truly got a fashion-forward update, thanks to the designer's use of materials such as velvet, as well as metallic lame finishes and a folksy patchwork print.
On the street
Also spotted on street style stars like Evangeline Smyrniotaki and former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris Carine Roitfeld: Trench coats that came with interesting details. The former wore one that had a chic bow around the collar, while the latter went full-leather with a cropped design.
Other fashion show-goers also experimented with different colours, textures and cuts.
On the shelves
