Purpose and translation. These were the two guiding principles behind Miu Miu's Spring/Summer 2023 collection by Miuccia Prada. "Fashion can have a meaning and a reason beyond utility - to decorate, to attract, is a meaning. But it is important that fashion functions – I am not anti-luxury but I am anti-ostentation," shares the Italian designer. This exploration translates into a collection which she describes as "born from reality, and born for reality."
It's not just the clothes that were reflecting reality – the models were made up of all genders, subverting the convention of who clothes are made for and highlighting the new reality to embrace.
The idea of complexity is delivered through layering of seemingly ordinary cotton shirts in different hues; pockets become the embodiment of utility and appear on jackets and as waist pouches. Classic Miu Miu pieces like leather jackets and coats appear evidently distressed. Shoes come with cut-outs and skirts with sequin embroidery in a bid to push the boundaries between decoration and function.
Ahead, the best buys to get from the collection that's now available both in stores and online.
With the entire body of this contemporary bag covered in pockets (yes, both the front and back), this new hobo bag style works out great for those that never seem to have enough space. It's also available in black and white versions.
The textured, three dimensional Matelasse quilted motif is a signature design of Miu Miu's and is an attribution to the spunky energy of the brand.
Though the collection had a generally muted colour palette, this sprightly lime green bag is definitely ideal for those looking to add some zest to their wardrobe. Note the 'Miu Miu' logo push-lock closure that can be easily “separated” as you open the clasp (first time for the brand).
A cross between knee-high boots and kitten heels, we envision some great parties and nights out in these thong boots. Bonus: the 4.5 centimeter heel won't be dampening the fun factor.
Here's a fun fact for you: the penny loafers are named as such because of the tiny slit along the upper lip that fits a single coin. In the '30s, people would place a penny there in case they wanted to make a call at the phone booth; American college students in the 1950s did the same as a statement to oppose the wearing of uniforms.
Remember the now-iconic pleated miniskirt that Miu Miu sent down the runway in its previous Spring/Summer collection? Now meet its roomier counterpart with pockets inspired by utility wear. Besides this dark wash of denim, it also comes in a nudeish-brown version.
This V-neck top with a frayed, distressed detail along the hem is made for layering, be it over a t-shirt or under.
We're digging the vintage feel of the caramel-coloured leather vest as much as we are the two zipper pouch-like pockets.
Clearly the concept of utility is a strong point of focus for the collection, as seen in this cropped bralette top with a buckle closure detail and a front pocket. In case you were wondering, the height of the top is 8 centimeters.
This long-sleeve shirt has a relaxed, oversized silhouette to translate a casual attitude and comes in a rather relaxing colour as well – pumice stone.
