Why You Should Add A Hair Oil To Your At-Home Treatment Regimen

Dry, frizzy hair is a common concern in our hot, humid climate. Moroccanoil's master hairstylist Violet Sainsbury tells us why using a hair oil is the perfect solution.

Using a conditioner and a mask to keep hair smooth and silky are standard operating procedures, but hair oils are not as frequently used, possibly because the grease factor is a deterrent. We spoke to Israeli beauty brand Moroccanoil's creative design team educator and hairstylist Violet Sainsbury to find out why hair oils should actually be a mainstay in your haircare routine, and why a host of celebrities, from Rosie-Huntington Whiteley to Madonna and Kim Kardashian, are fans:

Which types of hair are suitable for hair oils?

"All hair types. That's the beauty of a hair oil - there's no other product that is suitable for all kinds of hair."

What does a hair oil do that other hair products can't?

"It's a combination of three products in one. Not only will it act as a treatment by nourishing damaged hair and re-moisturising hair strands, it also protects hair from environmental factors and aids styling."

What are some misconceptions about hair oils that should be changed?

"The main misconception people have is that they think that when they put oil onto hair, it's going (to look and feel) oily. But at Moroccanoil, the beauty of our hair oil is that it absorbs immediately into the hair - it's touch-dry and you cannot feel the product in your hair at all, no matter if your hair is fine or very thick. Hair will take in all the fatty acids and vitamins and nutrients in the oil directly into hair."

What makes hair oil such a powerful beauty product?

"It's (largely due to) our signature ingredient, argan oil, which is found in everything from the hair oil to the hairspray. The benefits of argan oil have been known for centuries - it's rich in vitamin E, is high in anti-oxidants and fatty acids to help rejuvenate hair and give it more manageability and moisture."

Share some tips on preventing frizz in our hot and humid weather.

"To combat the humid weather, I would recommend Moroccanoil's Smoothing line, which is good for all hair types. The shampoo ($46) and conditioner ($49) have a trademarked Amino Renew technology which uses two key amino acids - cystine and lycine - to re-align hair's natural structure and help hair become smoother. The former helps with structural cohesion while the latter boosts collagen. The smoothing mask ($72) has hydrolysed vegetable protein and argan butter to coat porous strands and prevent split ends. The smoothing lotion ($62) is a styling product and is aimed at hair that's trickier to manage and is badly affected by the humidity. It has a medium-hold factor and is extremely humidity-resistant because it contains ingredients that prevents moisture in the air from getting attracted to hair. We also have a product called Frizz Control ($54) which you can spray on hair from the mid-lengths to the ends."

How can we achieve natural, effortless-looking hairstyles every day?

"One product you cannot do without is the Original Treatment Oil ($73), since it helps to treat and protect hair as well as helps you style it more easily. If you're looking for volume, the Volumizing Mousse ($46) is fantastic because it's weightless and you can't feel it in your hair. It also has a memory factor so your hairstyle will last the entire day. Also, use the Medium-Hold Luminous Hairspray ($42) - I use it for everything. It's humidity-resistant, gives natural shine and gives hair moisture and is residue-free." Available now at Kimrobinson Studio (#02-12 Ngee Ann City)
