Jonathan Anderson On Building A Journey Together With Uniqlo
The British wunderkind took a more minimalist approach for the Uniqlo x JW Anderson Fall/Winter 2022 collection.

British designer JW Anderson is now in the fifth year of his collaboration with Japanese lifestyle giant Uniqlo – which in fashion's fast turnover rate today where creative directors exit on an average of three years – seems rather remarkable.
"Over the years with each collection, we’ve developed this really collaborative relationship with Uniqlo that’s interesting to see evolve. Any good collaboration has to involve a meeting of two minds or two brands, with the blend or tension of the codes from each," says Anderson. "It’s a challenge but the teams work together and we can see the elements of JW Anderson applied into the framework of Uniqlo."
The Uniqlo x JW Anderson Fall Winter 2022 is a pleasantly straightforward proposition outfitted in earthy hues, with the occasional shock of hot pink through dual-toned sweaters.
The Fall/Winter 2022 collection ($7.90 - $199.90), which hits shelves and online on Oct 14, was inspired by "modern British architecture, mainly those with a stripped back, minimalist sensibility" – which might explain the straightforward styling.
Details such as the incorporation of fasteners (on track pants) to adjust and personalise fits, and the use of double-face fabrics (they tend to create a lightweight and exceptionally comfortable effect) in long belted coats might not be immediately noticeable in photos but they help to craft a more intimate feel when tried on.
The clothes mimicked what JW Anderson often wears in his day-to-day such as unfussy jeans and sweaters.
"People can really have a personal relationship with the brand. I wear the brand myself all the time, there are so many great staples," says Anderson. "The designs are accessible, but still with the attention to detail and ultimately the quality which sets Uniqlo apart."
