Cartier's Trinity Ring Turns 100 - And You're Invited To The Party

To mark the centenary of one of Cartier's most enduring icons, the maison is pulling out all the stops with Trinity 100, a global travelling pop-up that explores the Trinity's past, present and future.

Grace Kelly. Cary Grant. Nicole Kidman. Jean Cocteau. Catherine, Princess of Wales. Kylie Jenner. A seemingly disparate lot but they’ve all got one thing in common: they've all fans of Cartier’s Trinity ring, which was first launched in 1924 by Louis Cartier.

The influential French Dada and Surrealist artist and writer Jean Cocteau famously wore two Trinity rings stacked on his left little finger.

With its clean, architectural lines and gender-neutral allure, the Trinity feels pretty much today if you ask us. It's hard to believe that the ring was conceived a hundred years ago - a time when jewellery was rigidly gendered and minimalism wasn't yet in fashion. But Cartier has always had a knack of inventing forward-thinking designs - its indelible Crash timepiece for instance, is just one of many examples.

The original Trinity ring from 1924 has grown into a full collection of pendants, earrings and bracelets over the decades. Pictured here is the 2024 collection, a key feature of which is the new cushion-shaped iteration of the Trinity.

The mixing of various metals then was seen as a taboo too, but Louis Cartier, inspired by the creative circles he moved in, opted for the Trinity’s signature interlocking bands in yellow, white and rose gold to represent friendship, fidelity and love.

Small wonder the Trinity design, which has since been expanded to include earrings, bracelets and pendants, has come to be seen as a marker of special moments for many people.
