The Stylish Siblings Behind Singapore's Hip Spin Studio Crucyle

Who doesn’t like progressive, bold-thinking folks whose ideas start cool cultural trends that make life better? To kick off the new year, Female and Chanel Fine Jewellery speak to five who check the box, and look set to do it again. Here, meet Valerie, Beatrice (not pictured) and Calvin Ding, the brains behind Crucycle.

It’s the return of the athletic supermodel bod. When working out is the new partying hard. It’s been decades since looking and being strong has been this fashionable, and these siblings helped kick-start the movement here when they launched Crucycle two years ago.

While not the first of its kind, the spin studio (68 Duxton Road) quickly established itself as the fitness joint to see and be seen at. Adapted from the ones the Dings frequented in Los Angeles, where they grew up, it blends indoor cycling with an infectious club-like atmosphere. The Instagram posters announcing the music for each class – disco, Daft Punk x Justice – recall club flyers. Chic sportswear brands like Lululemon have done clothing collaborations. Among its clientele: fashion insiders and It girls like Velda Tan and Fiona Fussi. Says Beatrice, who’s also an instructor: “We spent a lot of time and effort strategising how people could belong to a cool brand.” Soon, that brand will grow bigger.

While she remains hush about details at press time, Valerie (she handles ops) reveals that they’ll go into yet another Gigi Hadid-approved fitness business by the second quarter of this year: boxing. “It’s a masterful art form that goes beyond throwing punches… Seeing how much people enjoy it as a professional sport and a form of exercise, and how they bond over it inspired us.”

While there are plans to bring it here, the first outpost will be in LA, complete with a raw industrial feel and “a programme aligned with the Crucycle brand” (read: intense yet addictive workouts with a strong community spirit), co-developed with a professional boxing trainer.
