At Swarovski, Bohemian Jewellery Takes A Glamorous Turn
And they will keep you lucky too.
By IMRAN JALAL,
Last we checked, fashion is still in an escapist mood. And bohemian dressing — a movement made popular during the make-love-not-war era and that's famous for its mashup of ethnic influences from far-flung cultures — has never been more in vogue. While this style used to be about that relaxed and rustic vibe, the update this season sees it taking a more glamorous and polished turn. Think hippy silhouettes amped up with embellishments, glitter and metallics.
Swarovski's Spring/Summer 2019 collection and its theme of getting women to #FollowYourInstinct fit nicely into the big picture. This season, its creative director Nathalie Colin mines for influences from Mediterranean cultures to dream up a repertoire that comprises lucky symbols, protective talismans, rare trinkets, and charms, accented in a vibrant colour palette of warm golds, azure blues and terracottas. Here, we shine the spotlight on three lines in the Spring collection that let you ace mystic chic the grown-up stylish way.
The Lucky Goddess Range
This line of charm bracelets, earrings, rings and necklaces riffs on Morrocan influences and amulets and is characterised by its use of lucky symbols. For instance, the hamsa hand signifies protection, while the horseshoe is a symbol of good luck and good fortune. The line also counts transformable pieces: A necklace comes with a sliding mechanism allowing the wearer to create different lengths, while chandelier earrings can be transformed and worn in three different ways.
The Origins Range
A cocktail-ready line comprising a sautoir necklace, a pair of chandelier earrings and a four-finger ring that echoes the vibrant jewellery designs often found in the Mediterranean region. Here, crystal charms of various cuts that are rendered in shimmering hues like coral and turquoise adorn each design.
The Oxygen Range
Consider this a more contemporary take on traditional evil eye jewellery that's a perennial in most Mediterranean cultures. The motif has been given an abstract interpretation with clean curves and lines, while the bracelets, necklaces and rings, combine different metal tones and crystal hues. The beaded Milgrain engraving that surrounds the crystals adds to that antique bohemian allure.
