An Exclusive Peek At Tiffany And Co's Next Must-Have Collection (And The Model Who Could Be The Next Carla Bruni)
Fans of Tiffany And Co would know how the American jeweller has been putting a fashionable spin on its collections in recent years. Its latest, Hardwear, could just be its coolest. Just how cool? How about green-haired, leather-wearing, budding-rock-star-meets-high-fashion-model cool?
While most of the international fashion press flocked home after the last day of Paris Fashion Week Fall Winter 2017 (read my review of my favourite show of the season, Balenciaga, here) in early March, I stayed on for a very important assignment: to shoot our May cover story. The plan was to showcase Tiffany And Co's daring and even more fashion-forward follow-up to its best-selling T collection, Hardwear, that I'm crazy about on an equally unexpected, gutsy yet beguiling face.
The American fine jeweller, as most would know, is a master at updating its own archival designs and making them at once current yet timeless. (Cue its hit Elsa Peretti collection, a must-know and -have if you're into simple yet sensuously sculptural earrings like these here.) Hardware, which launches worldwide in stores April 28 and is fronted by the inimitable Lady Gaga in campaigns, was inspired by a unisex bracelet with a ball-and-chain design dating back to 1971 in the archives. If the original doesn't sound progressive enough for you, the 2017 re-edition should.
Now a full fledged line spanning earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets in either silver or 18K gold, it refines the chain links on the original not only so that each piece moves fluidly and comfortably, but also can be worn in multiple ways. The result is also at once industrial and of womanly elegance. Needless to say, I was looking for a model who would best personify its spirit.
Enter 18-year-old Sasha Belyaeva, who first shot to fame last year walking in a Chanel haute couture show and turned out to not just be a pretty face, but also a budding singer who Youtubes herself strumming the guitar and belting out her own Russian ballads and covers of English love songs. She also had recently coloured her hair mint green to "match the colours of her eyes".
