Celebrity Hairstylist Kim Robinson On The Best Party Hairstyles For Women

In town recently to launch his book "Go Get Gorgeous", celebrity hairstylist Kim Robinson weighs in on the most popular party looks to have now and the hair products you should always have.

#1 styling tip for hair before a big night out

"Don't look like you're trying too hard. If you're going out for an evening event, don't have "evening hair" because it's not modern. It looks old. To look modern, it's all about the juxtaposition - if hair looks too perfectly done, it will date you. Wearing an evening gown in flat sandals or sneakers instead of heels will make you look young and not so tai-tai."

Must-have hair products

"Hairspray, because it will keep flyaway hair in place. You can also put it on your roots and give your hair a bit of volume. A lot of girls in Singapore have thin, flat hair, and I love a made-in-Japan product called Powder Shake that makes the hair thick without being sticky. It gives hair a nice, full look."

"I create a lot of "undone" updos. A lot of girls want to be different, and I pin up hair in ways that doesn't look like a (typical) updo; it'll look more like a bob or a shorter haircut. I pin it up in a messy way and leave strands falling out... so hair has more texture."

Hottest hair colour to have now

"There's been a lot of requests for pale, ash-toned blonde hair in Hong Kong and Singapore. (This look is achieved) by mixing together at least 8 varying shades. We don't do ombre or dip-dyeing because these may look cheap on some girls. Cool colours work (for Asian skin), so opt for darker shades or red tones. If your skin is yellowish, keep away from cool tones because you'll look really orangey or sick."

What sparked him to publish a book

"A young model, August Zhang (and the book's cover star), came to me two years ago. She had gone for a lot of go-sees and castings, but no one had booked her. After I gave her a new haircut (a short cropped 'do), a big campaign booked her a week later and she subsequently went to Paris Fashion Week. Today, she's living in New York with a model contract under Wilhemina Models. (She's the success story that made me want) to do a book on Asian hair, because (a good hairstyle) can change your life, make you feel confident and beautiful - and I want more girls to do something about it."
