Review: Chanel’s New Rouge Coco Hydra Gloss Just Restored My Faith In Lip Gloss
Forget the sticky, tacky texture often associated with lip gloss – Chanel Beauty’s newest lippie feels more like a comfortable lip oil, and we’re sold.
By Rachel Yohannan,
Once the pinnacle of early 2000’s beauty trends, lip gloss has since had to fight hard against coloured balms, liquid lipsticks, tints, and other newer forms of lip makeup that also bring an equally shiny, glossy effect – with stronger staying power to boot. Having endured that tacky texture all in the name of replicating Paris Hilton’s iconic frosted pucker – and one too many moments with my hair stuck on my lips after a gust of wind – I’ve sworn off glosses for quite some years now. But turns out, Chanel Beauty’s newest lip product is just the game-changer we’ve been waiting for.
Arriving just in time to catch the resurgence of Y2K makeup is the all-new Chanel Rouge Coco Hydra Gloss, a high-shine lipgloss offering nourishing skincare benefits with 85% hydrating ingredients. In true Chanel fashion, this of course includes camellia ceramides – with the camellia flower not just being a key motif of the House, but also a great moisturising element. Coupled with a hydra-peptide complex, it instantly quenches dry lips while offering all-day care and protection.

Chanel Rouge Coco Hydra Gloss review
Upon first application, I gingerly pressed my lips together, fully bracing myself for that all-too-familiar stickiness – but there was none. Miraculously, the Chanel Rouge Coco Hydra Gloss’ formula glides on smoothly without the product glooping up, and feels way more like a lip oil than the glosses from back in the day. Pretty impressive, considering that it’s a true gloss and not a hybrid of any sort. As hours went by, it remained comfortable with zero buildup, and held up well despite some snacking – though you might have to do a little touch-up after heavier meals or oily food.
Limited-edition shades of Chanel Rouge Coco Hydra Gloss for Summer 2026: Superposition, Fabuleuse, and Eclectique (from left to right)
There are 18 shades in total – some sheer and sparkly, some a little stronger and more opaque, but all boasting the same sort of lustre. Specially created for summer this year are three limited-edition shades: Fabuleuse, a citrine yellow; Eclectique; a light jade green; and Superposition, a soft coral. While Superposition holds its own nicely, we’d recommend using the former two as toppers instead; They’re both glitter-infused, but pretty subtle, so a base colour would help bring out their best. The coolness of Eclectique helps tone down brighter shades, while Fabuleuse lends a warm pigment perfect for the season.
If, like myself, you gravitate towards deeper colours, Inimitable is a nice burgundy red to try. Build it up over two to three layers for true-to-tube richness, or do a single sweep of colour and blot off the excess for a natural-looking stain. I also found myself liking Bijou, a shimmery rosewood that complemented my slightly tanned, warm-toned complexion. For that classic Y2K frosted lip combo, go straight for Icing, and aptly named milky pink.
Is the Chanel Rouge Coco Hydra Gloss a plumping lipgloss?
It’s not a lip plumper in the traditional sense, so you’ll be free of that stinging sensation that irritates sensitive skin. But thanks to its ultra shiny finish, as well as its hydrating power, the Chanel Rouge Coco Hydra Gloss does give off a juicy-looking finish to your lips, thus making them appear softer, plumper, and overall more luscious.
