Why The Updated Cheongsam is The New Wedding Dress

Designers now marry the traditional Chinese dress with contemporary influences including halters, portrait backs and unusual details like 3D floral applique.

The Halter

Halters are great for brides looking to flaunt toned arms and shoulders, besides looking chic and contemporary. If you have broad shoulders and want to down play them, go for thicker straps for a more balanced proportion.

A-Line/ Sheer Skirts

Classic cheongsams have either figure-hugging or straight-cut skirts. To balance a pear-shaped figure, try one with an A-line or sheer detachable skirt, like this one from Jin Zhi Yu Ye.

Portrait Backs

Cheongsams were made to look elegant and sophisticated and should remain so, even if you're looking to show some skin. A beautifully embroidered or lace portrait back looks sexy without being overly revealing.

Bring on the Prints

Instead of lace or embroidery, give your cheongsam an unconventional twist with lively prints, bright hues or even a metallic sheen.

Unusual Details

Now a trend on wedding dresses, 3-dimensional appliques are making their way onto cheongsams too. We're loving this lovely appliqued piece by Lai Chan (above).
