For Fall Winter 2021, Marine Serre continues to explore the process of upcycling—or regeneration—with even more conviction. Jackets and hoodies are constructed by piecing together vintage silk scarves with cleverly contrasting patterns (dubbed ‘regenerated’). Scarves are also attached to jersey tops that can be tied to form elements that can be personalised.

Similar treatment is given to old T-shirts with the logo prints truncated, while leather pieces are patchworked together in a jigsaw pattern to form tailored coats, jacket and pants, often laser-cut with the moon in UV print.

For Serre, creativity knows no boundaries. Dresses, tops and shirts are made from vintage bed linen and trousseaus. The original lace trimmings and Broderie anglaise are used as embellishments on sleeves and fringes on skirts; old tartan scarves are pieced together into a quilt-like wrap skirt; even fleece bed covers have been reimagined, as a skirt, vest and coat.

Serre is inspired and guided by the fabrics in an intuitive way, without deliberate consideration for the purpose for which they had originally been created for. To her, “everything makes sense” as highlighted in the digital presentation.

The casting of the models for this show is also diverse, and this season, Serre makes it a family affair. The faces we are used to seeing on Serre’s runways, have enlisted their sisters, brothers, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters for this collection.

The name of the collection Core is a play on the French word ‘coeur’, meaning ‘heart’. The stories told in the presentation and a limited edition book take us into the heart of Serre’s tribe, where we are invited into the ateliers and factories, and the models’ own intimate daily lives, in a series of 12 chapters that follow three years of Serre’s work.
