Started on TikTok: “June 2021!”

TikTok stats as of press time: 9,183 followers and 405.6K likes

Why know her: If you’ve been following FEMALE, then you already should. She’s the dreamy-eyed Singapore artist (real name: Hoon Jialing) whose ultra-stylish, pretty-meets-pop cartoon illustrations livened up our September 2022 cover as well as multiple other editorials. Cool lifestyle companies such as Nike and the ArtScience Museum have likewise commissioned her projects. Throw in her effervescent personality and it’s little surprise that she’s become something of an It girl in the graphic design community here: brand partnerships, event invitations and a hearty Instagram engagement – she’s got them all. Now watch out as she enters her fashion girlie era big time through TikTok, where she shares less about her work and more about her travels and fashion and beauty interests with the same childlike sense of wonder and chic.

Her background and how it’s shaped her content: “I love fashion, but I’ve never thought of myself as fashionable. My interest in fashion started when Tumblr was a thing. When I was 14, I ran a blog on which I would curate and post all these pictures of the runways and happenings at Paris and Milan Fashion Week. I also idolised models and would save up to buy fashion magazines because they had Gemma Ward or someone wearing Jacquemus on the cover. To be honest, it’s partly because of these fashion publications that I started developing an interest in graphic design too.”

Her best talent: “Drawing.”

How much of her TikTok personality is true? “100 per cent”

Most memorable comment she’s received: “‘Gorl you are pretty but you look so sad’ in response to a post that was a paid partnership with a beauty brand”

Her favourite TikTok account: “Currently, it’s the content creator Bee Better (@bee.better.company) because of how genuine he comes across in his critique of influencers, celebrities and businesses”

Number of hours she spends on her phone daily: “I’m embarrassed to say it is at least four hours, 80 per cent of which is on TikTok.”

Best thing about TikTok: “If it’s not doing well, no one will notice. If it’s doing great, everyone will notice. Also, it’s a great platform for graphic designers to share their processes and skills.”

Worst thing about TikTok: “Creepy old dudes who watch your content and comment something misogynistic”

Will she continue to be on TikTok when she is older? “I think that as I go on with adulthood, I would probably taper off from posting.”

If there was no TikTok: “I would be scrambling on LinkedIn to make connections – or petitioning to revive Tumblr.”
