What To Get From Kate Spade's Spring 2023 Collection
Kate Spade New York shows us how to embrace the everyday, come rain or shine.
By Khong Yawen,
Tom Mora and Jennifer Lyu are two industry vets making their debut as product designers at Kate Spade New York this season. He had cut his teeth at brands such as Cole Haan, Ralph Lauren and Coach, while she hails from a bags and accessories background, designing for brands like Tory Burch and 3.1 Phillip Lim. That illustrious CVs mean that the Mora-Lyu team have a firm grasp of the kind of contemporary items that women actually want in their wardrobes.
For that, the duo unveiled an optimistic collection with the quirk Kate Spade New York is know for. In particular, the Spring/Summer 2023 outing is a joyous embodiment of the act of getting caught in the rain; changing one's perspective on something that might be seemingly negative. This explains why cloud, raindrop, dragonfly and floral motifs appear throughout the collection, represented on bags and prints. One of the stand-out creations? A Surrealist cloud-shaped clutch that comes in a lightly pearlescent leather with dangling chains that mimic rain.
Not only is this Mora and Lyu's debut collection for the New York fashion house since their appointment in 2022, it's also the brand's first New York Fashion Week show since the pandemic.
The colour story is another big element of this collection. Bright hues such as cotton candy pink, coral red, yellow and 'Kate Spade green – created in honour of the brand's 30th anniversary – gives the pieces an added peppy vibe. As if that is not enough, florals bloom on dresses and even appear as a trompe l'oeil bouquet for a bag. Scroll on for a look at the serotonin-inducing collection that is out in stores now.

Inspired by the first-ever bag made by the brand in 1993, the Same Icon tote is designed with the bag's original boxy silhouette but updated straw and floral embroidery.

Named after the birthplace of Kate Spade New York, this tote – which is big enough to fit a 13-inch laptop – has a strong '60s influence thanks to its graphic pattern.
