S/S'23 Show Notes: Twins Rule The Runway At Gucci
Seeing double at the Twinsburg show by Gucci for Spring/Summer 2023.
By now, most of us has come to expect a profound and often metaphysical backstory to an Alessandro Michele collection at Gucci. So it did not come as a surprise that the premise on which he built the Spring/Summer 2023 collection – named Twinsburg – was a preoccupation with the themes of identity and the "double".
Presented at the Gucci Hub on Sep 23, the collection was perhaps his most personal and moving yet. Inspired by his own experience growing up with a mother who had a twin sister (he called both of them mamma), Michele explained in the press notes how "it wasn't even important to know which of them gave birth to me". He added: "They both were generative dieties in my Olympus."
A total of 68 pairs of twin models took to the runway for Gucci's Twinsburg show.
This idea of the otherness manifested in how the show was split into two rooms... before voila, a wall lifted to reveal models and their identical twin walking in sync in exactly the same looks. The apex moment of the show happened when the twins met one another in the centre of runway, holding hands for one very powerful finale walk which reportedly left some guests emotional.
Naturally, the clothes provided the other theatrical moment: cue the fabulous gender-fluid beaded jackets, the flamboyant sunglasses adorned with cascades of crystal fringe and tailored suits worn with pants that look like garter-pants hybrids. There was even a nod to the "evil self" in the form of Gremlin prints and stuffed accessories. Just for the record, it would have been an icing on the cake if Michele had taken the final bow with his doppelganger and kindred spirit Jared Leto.
