BEST HIDDEN CAFES IN SINGAPORE
1. Living Room
What to expect: Talk about a hidden gem – you won’t even be able to find this one on Google Maps. Soft launched in mid-January, Living Room is a brand new cafe tucked within home goods store Late Morning.
It has a minimal set-up that’s still cosy and warm, almost a refuge within the bustling Chinatown area. Here, they serve coffee, matcha and a small menu of assorted bakes including both savoury and sweet open-faced sourdough toasts and cheesecake. It’s the best spot to rest your feet after an afternoon of window shopping in the area, and enjoy a good conversation with your date sans the hordes of tourists in the area.
Why we love it: The standout here is definitely the matcha – rich, creamy and not too grassy. Read our review of Living Room here.
How to find it: Head into lifestyle and homeware store Late Morning and walk to the back to find the cafe.
Address: 230 South Bridge Road
2. Same Days Coffee Stand
What to expect: Nestled within popular furniture store Grafunkt, Same Days Coffee Stand is a small coffee kiosk that serves citrus-centric drinks inspired by the tropics. Their most popular drink is the Espresso Tonic, which features their house-made tonic water – a pick-me-up that’s light and refreshing.
The cafe is community-focused with friendly baristas, and often hosts collaboration events with brands (they’ve previously hosted some with the likes of HAY, Morning Coffee and Salomon), so there’s always something new to sip on or check out while you’re there.
Why we love it: Although there’s minimal seating here, you can do some browsing while sipping within Grafunkt – perfect for couples manifesting their dream homes.
How to find it: Walk into Grafunkt and you’ll spot the wooden structure that’s the home of Same Days Coffee Stand.
Address: 292 Joo Chiat Road
3. Mad Roaster’s Slow Bar
What to expect: Started with a purpose to support refugees in different areas of need across the world, Mad Roaster’s is not new to the local coffee scene. It currently has kiosks at Amoy Street Food Center, Depot Heights, Nanyang Technological University and the National Heart Centre, but its latest cafe concept, Mad Roaster’s Slow Bar, is the one that you need to know about.
Mad Roaster’s Slow Bar, located within the Enabling Village at Lengkok Bahru, is Mad Roaster’s first outlet to serve a full menu with hearty mains and brunch items, along with their usual array of bakes and beverages. Highlights include the classic Honey Butter Latte, Beef and Marrow Rice Bowl and Chocolate Babka, though there’s even old-school Kaya Toast!
Why we love it: The cafe is hidden in the back of the compound, complete with outdoor seating that’s pet-friendly – good news for pet parents who can’t bear to leave their furry friends at home.
How to find it: When you get to Enabling Village, walk to the corner of the compound to find the standalone building that houses Mad Roaster’s Slow Bar.
Address: 20 Lengkok Bahru, Enabling Village Outpost #01-20
4. Pout Rooftop Cafe
What to expect: You might’ve seen the view from this cafe all over Instagram lately, and for good reason. POUT is a light-filled rooftop cafe with a gorgeous view of the Singapore skyline, which can be admired while sipping specialty drinks like their Honeycomb Latte and Peanut Butter Mocha, or enjoying homemade desserts like the Brulee Basque Cheesecake.
Why we love it: Although the space can get a little packed – no surprise there, when the cafe boasts a view like that – it never feels too cramped. You can sit inside or even on the outdoor terrace if the weather’s especially fine. By night, the cafe also turns into ABODE Bar, which just opened its doors this January.
How to find it: Locate the side entrance to CMO Building along Carpenter Street and head up the lift to level 6.
Address: 50 South Bridge Road, Level 6
5. Bee Hoe Coffee
What to expect: A quaint takeaway coffee stand in Joo Chiat run by Autocutt Barbershop, Bee Hoe Coffee is a great no-frills spot for couples who love a bit of people watching. It’s located in a back alley, and there’s no seating apart from two bar stools and some chairs outside, but the vibes are wonderful on a breezy day when the sun isn’t scorching hot.
It offers Vietnamese-inspired coffee drinks, including Honey Egg Coffee, along with other unique menu items like Iced Salted Coffee and Coconut Coffee.
Why we love it: It’s a great spot to chill and watch the world go by, and the stools do almost make you feel like you’re sitting kerbside at a cafe in Ho Chi Minh City. That’s our dream date.
How to find it: It’s located in the back of Autocutt Boardroom – find it by walking along Tembeling Road to the alley behind the row of shops.
Address: 55 Joo Chiat Place
6. Ceres
What to expect: Ceres has a moody, bare-bones interior that’s incredibly calming (dare we say, even romantic) and great for long, uninterrupted conversations. Located on the second floor of a shophouse in Boat Quay, it feels like an oasis within the bustling CBD.
Aside from coffee, the cafe offers a variety of snacks and light bites – Citrus Ham or Beef Pastrami on sourdough, Olive Oil Cake or even a classic Granola Bowl.
Why we love it: You’ll often find people working on their laptops here, which means it usually feels a lot more quiet and peaceful.
How to find it: Look for the doorway labelled 18A and you’ll find a lamp with the cafe’s name, Ceres. Walk up the stairs to the second floor – it’s the first door on the left.
Address: 18A Circular Road
7. Butter Tgt
What to expect: Similarly located on the second floor of a shophouse in Duxton Hill, Butter Tgt’s space is airy and bright with plenty of seating. Must-try items include madeleines that are baked to order, which are fluffy with a crispy exterior, avocado with egg on toast and any of their bakes that are constantly on rotation.
Popular specialty drinks here include the Lemon Einspanner and the Iced Coconut Americano, which make for the ideal afternoon tea pairing. The cafe can get busy and takes walk-ins only, but the wait is well worth it.
Why we love it: There are so many options on offer at Butter Tgt that you’ll be spoiled for choice, so it’s almost always going to be a sharing situation – a great conversation starter for you and your date.
How to find it: Look for the Butter Tgt signboard that’s visible from the street and head through the door to the second floor of the shophouse.
Address: 76A Duxton Road
8. A Slow Cup
What to expect: At A Slow Cup, the idea is to slow down and take a breather from the fast pace of city life – hence the name and atmosphere of the space. Located on the sixth floor of The Cathay within a nail salon, it’s truly an “if you know, you know” space that allows you to be present with your date.
There’s a diverse line-up of specialty coffee and tea drinks with beans from Flip Coffee Roasters, but the cafe is best known for their Slow Einspanner. It also has a limited selection of bakes, which are sourced from different local bakers.
Why we love it: The cafe’s concept is all about enjoying the moment and it’s never too crowded, so you won’t feel pressured to hurry your conversation or finish your drinks to make room for the next group of patrons.
How to find it: Head all the way up to level 6 of The Cathay. Walk towards the entrance of The Cathay Residences and you’ll find Painted Nail Bar, where A Slow Cup can be found within.
Address: 2 Handy Road, The Cathay #06-06
