Loewe's Crafted World Exhibition Lands In Tokyo

The Japanese capital is the second stop for the brand's first major exhibition, which was showcased in China last year.

Japan has always been a haven for those seeking creativity, whether it’s the seamless blend of old and new in Tokyo, the art-filled island of Naoshima, or the quaint charm of Kyoto. It’s a place where inspiration practically floats in the air.

A leather lover’s paradise

Now, Loewe is hopping on the Japan bandwagon with its Crafted World exhibition, fresh from its debut at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre in May 2024. Tokyo takes the spotlight next, running from March 29 to May 11 in Harajuku – the beating heart of the city’s coolest scene. It’s also one of the last chances to witness the brilliance of former creative director Jonathan Anderson, who transformed the brand into a cultural powerhouse before his recent departure.

An iron tea kettle by the Onishi family is among the highlights of the Crafted World Tokyo exhibition.

This stop hits different for Loewe, though: Japan was the brand’s first expansion outside Europe, with its first store opening back in 1973. Crafted World is your chance to dive into the brand’s rich history, Spanish heritage, and obsession with craftsmanship, exploring everything from iconic designs to cultural collabs. It is essentialy a visual mood board of Loewe’s evolution.

Get up close to 54 striking looks from both men's and womenswear collections, showcased on mannequins atop plinths. Paired with artworks from the Loewe art collection, these pieces create a dynamic dialogue, mirroring the bold silhouettes of the designs.

Expect get up close and personal with Loewe’s collaborations with some of Japan’s most iconic creatives, like Studio Ghibli and Kyoto’s Suna Fujita ceramics studio. You’ll also get an exclusive look at a documentary on the Onishi family, who’ve been crafting ceremonial Kama tea kettles in Kyoto for over 400 years.

The exhibition celebrates craftsmanship and time-honoured artistic techniques, championed by the Loewe Foundation the annual Craft Prize, and Loewe’s many collaborations with artisans worldwide.

Plus, explore works by Loewe Foundation Craft Prize finalists such as Tanabe Chikuunsai IV, Moe Watanabe, and 2019 winner Genta Ishizuka, alongside artists like Arko, Hafu Matsumoto, and Jiro Yonezawa, who were featured at Loewe’s Salone del Mobile.

Studio Ghibli fans are in for a treat with an entire room dedicated to the beloved Japanese studio.
